Cleaning a Carb

My 35 evinrude keeps sneezing and has trouble starting & running until it warms up. I am going to clean the carb on it but it will be my first time. Bought some carb cleaner for it a buddy said I can start the motor and spray it into the carb until it bogs down. Then let it sit for 24 hrs and start it back up. Will this work or am I going to blow myself and the motor up. I would rather do it that way then take it off completely. Also, it has trouble peeing. I have checked for a clog in the line but found nothing. At full throttle it will start to pee better, but is at a drip when in idle. Any ideas possibly the impeller? Thanks.

That may or may not help. There are portions of the inside of the carb that won’t be get touched with the spray-through approach. I have, on a few occasion seen ‘some’ benefit from the spray through carb cleaner. More frequently, it mucks stuff up worse. So, try the spray (hope to get lucky) and make sure the parts are available to do the full remove/clean/reassemble trick.

I have rebuilt auto carbs (long time ago) and multiple small engine and outboard carbs. In general, once you do it the first time, it is quick and easy. Get a shop manual that covers the chore and follow it step by step. I have a Seloc manual that covers my 1995 88spl Johnson and it guides you through the steps very nicely.

If that’s more than you want to do, take it to Chris V or the guys at Hanckel’s. I can’t imagine rebuilding a carb on a 35 could cost that much. I have had good luck with the guys at Hanckel’s and Chris deserves the business in return for the advice he gives here.

Sneezing is a sign of being too lean, might want to try adjusting it first. Also, I bought a manual on CD Rom for my motors on ebay for $4.00.
The kit for that carb is about $20.00 if you buy it on-line yourself. Run a shock treatment of Seafoam through it (in your gas tank) and you may get it cleaned. It is easy to take it off, take it apart and soak the components, I then dry mine with an air hose, put together with new kit parts, get the float level by bending the needle seat tab, manual will tell you how many turns to set the adjustment screw to get it close. If not comfortable, like they said before, I’d take it to Chris V.
