…but still no tailer.
Headed out today on a 5.8, expecting the wind to push more water on the flat than called for. Got to the flat about 45 minutes before high, and saw fish immediately.
First fly of the day was a black/pink clouser. No particular reason, I just thought it looked pretty, so I gave it a shot. Put it right in front of tailer #1, twitch-twitch - nada. Picked it up and cast again, twitch-twitch and nothing. Decided to switch flies and tied on everyone’s favorite, Mr. Copperhead. While tying it on, I glanced up and saw that the fish was actually working closer to me. By the time I had it tied on, the fish was literally within pole distance. I flipped the copperhead in front of him, twitch-twitch and BAM! Gills flared and he hit it like a freight train and never slowed down. Me, being a rookie, set the hook as soon as he hit it and POP goes the 15 lb. tippet, and away swims the only copperhead I had in my box.
Tied on a Dupre and headed further down the flat. Didn’t take long before I spotted another fish. He was in some thick grass - not very conducive to spoon flies. Waited to see if he’d move out, but no dice. Spotted another one close by in the open, so moved into position to cast to him. As I get in position, the tail goes up so I plop the spoon on his head. Twitch-twitch and nothing. You’ve got to be kidding me. Cast again, twitch-twitch, and absolutely no response. Switched to a shrimp pattern, but by this time he had moved into some thick grass, so I moved on.
Quickly found another fish in the open, working down a grass line. Put the shrimp fly in front of him several times, but no take. Tied on a different gold spoon, put it perfectly in front of him, and nothing. Saw a small disturbance right behind the spoon, but then the fish evaporated - I never saw any other sign of him.
Decided to switch flies, AGAIN and pursued some fish that were in some thick grass. Never got another shot, all fish were cruising by this point and not really tailing. End
