Hi everyone. You have a great forum here! I will be fishing around IOP the last week of July. I will be fishing mostly from my kayak but will have a 9wt with me. I like to tie my own flies but have limited ability. I do tie a decent Clouser that the Stripers and Bluefish in NJ seem to like. It seems that most flies for reds are darker colors. Most of the Clousers I have tied have been white / yellow / Chartreusse. Any recommended colors would be appreciated. I was thinking combos of olive / orange / brown / red. Thanks guys and keep up the great posts. Tom.
also, the electric chicken (hot pink topped with chart. with lots of copper flash) seems to work well in murky h20… tie with weedguard

There is nothing wrong with the white/chartreuse if you have them. Bring them along! Have caught many local reds with that one during the summer. If you have some white/reds, brings those too.
Clouser??? Who needs a clouser… I got a fist full of M4’s and Gonzo… I don;t need no stinkin clouser… Just kidding… If you dong nab a red, trout and flunder will slam a clouser too…

you definitely want something that works hook up. i tried bendbacks in the grass yday and they came through well. M4 has rabbit and schlappen so it moves on its own. they are dark olive and brown at least the ones ive seen. i also like those materials.
I’ll show ya when you come down SIC Swing by the Charleston Angler in Mount Plesant and grab a few to take home up north

LOL!!!
My first tailing fish was on an orange/white clouser.
I use clousers (mostly an electric chicken) from time to time blind casting drop offs and such for reds and trout.
I fish the Beaufort area pretty extensively. If the fish aren’t in the grass, I’ll throw a chartreuse/white clouser tied with a LOT of long gold flashabou. The flash extends about 1/2" past the end of the bucktail. I fish them around oysters and grass points. They eat it. So do the trout.
You may want to pick up a couple of Dupree or Hamilton Spoon flies if the fish are in ths slop, otherwise, if you want to throw something more natural try a Brown & White or Olive & White as well as the previously mentioned Chartresue & Whtie Clousers. I’d also tie a couple Pink & Chartresue, Pink & Lime or Purple & Chartruese and all black, all brown or all olive. Another pattern that you may want to check out is something call a Copper Head, which uses all synthetic flash material like flasabou and crystal flash. I beleive that this fly was designed by a local Capt. Scott Hamilton, who is the same guy that came up with one of the above spoon fly designes. The darker colors seem to work best in dirty water so anything in the Gold, Black, Dark Brown, Bronze, Copper & Chartreuse as well as Red, Purple or Orange catch fish. You can mix and match materials so don’t be afraid to play around with your materials, you can even add a mylar rattle if you want and need a little extra punch, just don’t over tie or over weight your patterns, you’ll be fishing pretty shallow… no major striper rips south of Mason Dixon line, best of luck!
I tied these up. sorry for the poor quality of the photo, my photographic abilities are equal to my tying abilities…
