It’s not a bad job, but since you mentioned it’s a 78, I wouldn’t want the job. Working on an outboard foot 35 years old would probably mean too much corrosion and one pain in the butt to disassemble… unless it is in pristine condition. I would look for a used foot and just swap the entire unit. my 2 cents.
I’ve run many old motors in the past, but as I’ve aged I prefer to use a modern boat motor as reliability is paramount to me these days.
