I do not believe that you would find it very effective. The barrel will be full of water so the BB/pellet will meet instantaneous resistance which would equal little to no muzzle velocity. How close can you get to them? How about something like a Hawaiian sling?

Interesting idea. It would be fun to test this one out in a “kiddie pool”, to see the results.
As for getting NEAR a Lionfish… It’s easy. They don’t have any natural predators and seem fearles. I have knifed a few. They hold their ground until the initial puncture, then it’s a bit too late. A long sharp ice-pick would be the ideal tool for dispatching these ugly things, but I don’t fancy bringing one of those tools to the bottom with me. The dive knife can be enough of a hazard if you make a wrong move.
The hardest part is getting them pinned to a hard surface so you can get good penetration with the knife. The little buggers feel like they are armor-plated on the sides. Have not been able to stick one in the belly so far. At least they are smart enough to guard one part of their body!
A BB to the forehead would be much more fun, without the risk of stings. The real problem will probably be corrosion of the BB gun, which would make this an expensive hobby.

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?
Well it was just an idea. I can’t blame divers for not spending all their dive time killing them when they are there to hunt grouper. If it was a viable method, I don’t think it would be to hard for someone to make a co2 pistol out of polymer. A heavier than lead bb out of tungsten or something would make it more efficient, sounds like a 3-5 ft effective range would be enough, and the pistol is something they could carry and pop lions on the way by without ruining their groiper hunting.
Guard Father OTF Automatic Spike / Icepick (Black)
The Guardfather (as this device is often called) features a stainless spike that shoots out the front of the handle. The release button is under the shirt clip. The clip can be rotated to expose the button or to cover it, preventing accidental firing. What do you do with the spike, you ask? We have no idea- it could be used as an ice pick, glass breaker, or for lifting hot meat off a grill (we tried it- works great). And of course you can always “Jack Bauer” someone in self defense- this type of spike was featured in Fox’s 24 television series. The spike is 440 stainless steel and the body is black anodized aluminum. Shirt clip for easy carry.

What if you tried to fashion a small disposable dart (Clothes hanger) to fire from the CO2 gun?? You would have to make sure the fit is very close on the barrel size. but may the additional mass of the small shaft would give you a little distance.
