Is the coal shoot those burnt out railroad tracks in the cooper, by drum island on the downtown side? We were fishing over their this weekend and saw those im pretty sure thats the coal shoot. How do you fish that area? My dad and i would like to try for some sheeps. I know fiddlers are the best bait. Do we bottom fish or use corks? What tides are better? we would get fiddlers and frozen or live shrimp are those the best baits out their? thank you guys.
Look back through some of the sheephead threads. You’ll see some good stuff on the “coal tipple”. That is where you were.
The real pros get right up in those pilings. This can be dangerous when a tug or large ship comes by, as the swell can be pretty big and bounce you around a bit. Some fish the single pilings closer to shore. I think low tide has been best for most. Just pull up near a piling, scrape some barnacles off, and put your line a foot off the bottom, right up against the piling. Fiddlers and oysters work very well. Set the hook before they bite, and you are golden. If you don’t get a bite FAST, they are not there.
I’ve hooked a few huge “wild things” out there that just bit and ran, breaking the line. I suspect large black drum. Since we never saw what it was, I fantasize that it was a 30 pound sheephead!
spareparts,
There should be a small window when the pinfish leave, and the sheeps are there … atleast thats what I have heard, correct me if I am wrong
here is a vid from “inside” the coal tipple. the fish are there. Get there about 2 hours before low tide and fish the out going tide till an hour of incoming tide. hope this helps
That kid in the video(thanks for sharing that)will never forget that trip!
I’ll help you out. The other day we should have got a pint vs. hunting for the trout
