coastal rivers and eels?

do any of you coastal striper anglers use live eels for bait. I caught several on plugs this weekend and wondered how the eel fishing would be.

I’ve used eels while fishing for cobia. Haven’t tried fishing for any stripers in the saltwater.

Funny this came up. Yesterday, one my striper fishing buds was going through some of my offshore stuff and began looking at the ribbonfish trolling lures I have. Got to thinking about it and wondered…may hafta at least try them! Since they fish will strike at a u-rig with white tubes and many variances of it, haft think that some of the saltwater genes may induce a strike from a larger fish. ■■■■ catching all these shorties!

I’ve been thinkin the same thing! I’ve got some saltwater lures/skirts I’ve been wanting to try. Let me know when you go out and give it a test.

the inland coastal areas of Northeastern NC…eels are the number one bait used to catch stripers, live bait anyway. Usually eels are hard to come by around here, but I have started noticing them in tackle shops. I think people are using them for catfish…I have a few isolated spots that hold fish regularly, but they are sometimes hard to catch. I was just thinking…I will report later…

Many many moons ago (40 years)we caught stripers on eels in Santee. There were alot of eels in Santee at the time. Twenty years ago I tryed them in Murry with no luck. We were killing the fish on gizzard shad but never caught a fish on the eels.

Good Luck

Triton, are your ribbonfish the rubber one’s made by Williamson? I’ve seen them at Boaters World and was wondering if they really work. Have you caught kings on them before?

I fish with live eels alot in the costal rivers around Gtown but have never caught a striper on them. I dont target them though only Catfsih but if you fished 1 in an area known to hold stripers under a float suspended I am sure they will work. Let me know if they do or PM me for more details on them.

A live eel hooked through the lips on a light saltwater jighead is the ticket when thrown on the bottom near structure.

Not really a river, but ICW.

Where do you get eels either for cobia or stripers

Not to be an a** but a live ell on lite line near anything will be the last time you tried that. I cobia fish in bft and the best I have come with is knocking the **** out of em against the side of the boat and then sending them down. If they are alive and kicking when you put that thing in the water you will experience the worst kind of knot. I have tried stinger hooks and I wont try that again, ribbonfish rigs didnt work either. Also a bucket with ice and some sand thrown in will cool the eel down and give you some grit to hold onto and he wont immediately tie himself into a knot. Just my .02

I have been catching them fine on artificials. decided not to mess with the slimy bastards. thanks for all of the input though
