Cobia 2018

Am I right to be happy about the Ammendment to the cobia regulation change approved for 2018? It seems as though they understand the issues a little better in this fishery than for some of our other more storied fisheries. Correct me if I am wrong. Either way I will be happy to keep the few I catch next year.

From the link you posted, I would be happy with those rules.

The last few years the seasons were a slaughterhouse at the 60 reefs on the days I fished them. I wasn’t surprised when the season was closed. I can’t appreciate those folks killing so many fish when our boat only keeps enough to eat.

One day I witnessed folks passing fish to their buddy boat when they caught their limit. That’s just not sporting IMHO.

It no coincidence there hasn’t been a crowd at the bridge. Just think. All those boats there to kill a cobia. Now that you can’t keep them nobody fishes for them. Used to be you could walk on the boat in the broad during the run. This year I think three boats was the most I saw. That means every one of those boat only came to kill a cobia. No sport fishing

I went to the Broad a couple years ago the first time in 10-15 years. We didn’t catch a Cobia in several days fishing and I only saw one fish caught by another boat. I went back when you could walk across the boats at the bridge and if you weren’t fighting a fish the boat next to you was. I found out the Cobia haven’t showed in the Broad the past couple seasons. It’s scary even though I have been seeing them in good numbers on the reefs. I don’t have any problem with tougher bag limits as now I’d rather tag one. My issue is I have caught a lot of Cobia and didn’t believe it possible to put one in the boat without a gaff. I have laughed at boats trying to get one in a net. Maybe I have some “learnin” to do. lol

I’ve been on the Broad during many cobia seasons and I don’t remember one time when all the boats were catching fish even many years ago. In my experience the people consistently catching Cobia are not getting them were the “fleets” hang out. They are still in the broad and St. Helena. We have netted a few, specially if we were skeptical on legal size. Gaff the ones that are no question.
