Hey fellow CFers! i would like to fish for cobia. I know they are a warm water species but when do they start coming in? and when are they in full force? we have to vintage penn open reels. The kinds people use offshore and stuff these:http://www.ebay.com/itm/PENN-FISHING-REEL-No-85-MADE-U-S-A-/160542832680?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2561193828 with big boat rods. I want to know where to fish, harbor jetties or nearshore? what bait? when? basically cobia fishing for dummies. Also want to tackle some AJs and big sharks around the harbor this summer!
A small fish in hand is better than big fish in promise
Yakman, that probably ain’t enough reel for a cobia, or amberjack, or a big shark:wink:
Cobia can be caught inshore in Port Royal from about the middle of May to the first of August, give or take. Big sharks in the same place but longer, April until cold weather. Cobia will be at all the near shore reefs spring until fall. Amberjack never come inshore, right now they are out near the gulfstream, but will move in to all the near shore reefs in spring.

I tell ya what, I really like your style and fishing enthusiasm for a young fellow
How about when the cobia start running good in Port Royal in the spring, I’ll take you out and show you how and where to catch them in places accessible to your yak, and I’ll bring the tackle? It’s on me.
This is a pic of my son with an inshore Port Royal cobia…

NICE Capt Larry! Very nice! Don’t see that on this board often!
When the dogwoods bloom jump down to the BFT/HH section and you will see all the cobia posts going on. Pretty much start looking when water temp gets to 68 but I usually hold out until its closer to 72. If you can shark fish you can cobia fish the Broad River.
