Cobia and kings

How far from the jetties do you have to run average to find Cobia and kings. 21ft mako big enough to get out there on a nice day

You can find cobia and kings on just about any of the reefs. My favorite is the Edisto 60 which is about 15 miles, or so, out of Cherry Point. You don’t have to go that far though. I’ve been 45 miles out in my 19 1/2’ boat, so yeah…you’re good. Just pick your days wisely and the fuels the limit.

they are at the end of the jettys- no need to go further.

That is what a 21’er is made for, Cobia and Kings (and Spanish, Bull Reds, etc). You don’t have to go very far for them at all. You just have to watch the weather closely. If things look like they are changing for the worse you can hightail it back to the hill in relatively quick time.

Just make sure you have a vhf radio, GPS, flares etc. That stuff is all relatively cheap and a requirement. Seatow or Boat US too. Gotta have that. You can even pick up a personal epirb for $200 or so instead of the full blown EPIRB.

Here is just a glorious story about a captain with glorious hair that caught a king at the grillage once:
