Just moved to South Carolina a couple of months ago due to the Air Force from the Florida panhandle. Looking at taking a charter with a couple of guys from work. Looking at either Myrtle Beach, Charleston, or Hilton Head. Out of those where is the best cobia fishing, and do you know of any charter boat captains that are good in those areas with decent prices. From what I’ve seen, I think we can get an 8 hour offshore trip for right around $1,000. The charters we’ve thought about so far are papa bear and the integrity out of Hilton Head and the voyager out of myrtle beach. Thanks for the help guys!
And we plan on going in middle to late may.
no need for an offshore trip for cobia in hilton head in may, port royal sound and broad river is full of them in may, nearshore reefs like betsy ross and tire reef usually hold lots of them as well papa bear, stray cat, the runaway, outcast, and polecat will put you on the fish if they are around
I’ve read that but we wanted to go offshore so we can’t target other fish.
The Cobia won’t be offshore at the time they will be in the sounds breeding in Hilton Head, you could always give a call and see if they would do a 6 hour trip to the Ross.

Check with Knot@Work Charters, Robert Olsen. He can customize a trip for you and should be able to accomplish your wishes. Also, towards Hilton Head, “Coutland”, should be able to do the same. Win-Win either way in my opinion.

Try Fishing Coach out of HHI . I know he does fish for Cobia plus other fish . He could probably get you to the "Betsy Ross "
Look up his name under members or wait till he posts on here .You can also try Waldo Phinney on the Sea Wolf .He is in the Port Royal/ Beaufort. He fishes offshore .His website is www.seawwolfcharters.com
I DONT HAVE A BOAT

John Irwin …Flyright Charters… He is down there in May every year doing cobia charters
I looked at the DNR website and it says 2 per person per day. After looking at one of the charters they mentioned a group of 4 could only keep one each. Are there special requirements for charter boats on harvesting? Does anybody have any experience with “The Integrity” out of HH? Is the cobia fishing better out of Hilton Head or Charleston? Thanks again guys!
Nowhere is better for cobia in May and June than Port Royal Sound. I second Fishin Coach Charters out of Hilton Head. Capt. Dan Utley will put you on the fish.

The Broad River is one of the two largest spawning grounds for cobia on the east coast. Stick with Port Royal
As has been mentioned, there’s generally a good bit cobia in Port Royal that time of year. Offshore of Port Royal (Betsy Ross, Naval towers, etc.) are a much safer bet, especially in late may and into June. And between the reef structure and live bottom nearby, you can catch triggers, seabass, vermillion, and an occasional grouper (along with assorted pelagics). Plenty of cobia off charleston as well, just not as consistent and no inshore fishery in case it’s snotty and you can’t get offshore.
chuck griffin with aqua adventure charters…charlestonsportfishing.com great charter guide and will also be able to catch other species as well…bottom fish and kings

Guys in Late June, July, and August you can find some very nice cobia off the coast of Charleston as well as being able to target other species as you want. If you go fish the broad river you will primarily target cobia, do a full day with an experienced guide, it will cost a little more but you and your guest should have an amazing experience even land some mahi, wahoo, grouper, snapper species, and all others listed above.
