Cobia Fishing

Cobia run getting ready to start down Beaufort. Been thinking about trying to go in the Yak. Has anyone been on their Yaks before. Is anyone interseted in trying to go sometime late April or early May?

Good luck. I have done it a couple of times now with no success. Make sure to stay away from flood tides! I have tried a couple of times during flood tides (please note this was by chance not by choice) and I almost sank my PA 14 after getting my anchor hung. The water was coming in so fast i could not pull the anchor trolley back towards the front of that kayak and it started pulling the kayak under as the water. The water kept rising so i eventually had to climb to the back to cut the rope. I am not saying I would not try it again but I certainly will never fish for cobia on the Broad during a flood tide again!

I might go, I have a sail yak a hobie adventurer and I just got the inflatable amas for extra stability (got tired of swimming int he cold water). When and where is it, I am in charleston.

when are you going?

Have tried several times with not much luck. Also wanted to drift the outgoing tide to the turtle and then fish it and then fish the incoming tide back to the bridge. Other option is to put in on the South side of the bridge and fish the Rose Island cut. Just be careful, the water can change in a hurry. Some of the biggest seas I’ve ever been in have been on the Broad.

Have you picked a time yet?

You guys BE SERIOUSLY CAREFUL in the Broad. That river will turn nasty in a hurry. I don’t want my buddy Doyle ricking his life on a rescue because someone did something stupid.

Who’s Ready for a Sleigh Ride? www.KayakFishSC.com

We had a group that did it several years ago for a couple years in a row. As others have mentioned it can get hairy fast especially if you accomplish the task and hook one, eels all over your kayak ripping current, lots of boats . Better have everything strapped down tight and be ready for a ride cross current. Also be prepared for some sharks as bicatch. Have seen anchors fouled, paddles ripped out of holders. Plan and be prepared for those conditions.
