I went cobia fishing on Friday the 20th on the broad. I ended up seeing 4 fish total. I was able to cast to 3 of the cobia. I stuck two of them and the third followed before I lost sight of him.
Fish one was in front of the boat, I paralleled the fish, and made my cast as I came abreast of the fish. I stripped the fly past him, and he looked but then continued on. I picked up the fly and put the fly just past his head and stripped it as fast as I could right past his nose. As soon as the fly cleared his nose he turned and hammered the fly. He quickly broke me off. Fish #2 was the follow. He turned on the fly and was coming, but as the fly and fish got behind the boat I lost sight of both the fish and the fly.
Fish 3 took my fly, and I fought him for about 5 minutes before he spit my fly. I had just gotten the backing back on the reel when he spit it.
On Saturday I went with my fried Paul. We ended up with a double otf!
The fish were not big (29 and 27) but it was great to finally get a cobia in the boat.
Paul is our local expert when it comes to catching cobia otf. I have about 8.5 minutes of video that I will try and post…when it is done uploading. I call that fly that I tied that you see in the fish above Cobia Crack!
Paul went again on Sunday on stuck one on that same fly you see above that was 38 inches.
That is awesome. Congrats on the catches. Conditions were perfect on the Broad. We boated one keeper and had one involuntary release. We didn’t pull out the fly rod out until we had one in the box. Of course we didn’t get any shots then. Maybe this weekend…
I like the stinger hook on that fly. What size hook is that?

I tie the stinger in using 50lb test mono. I wrap it down the lenght of the shank with some extra at the eye. Next I fold the doubled line back over the shank and wrap it down again. After that I epoxy the wraps and let dry. Then I tie the rest of the fly.
I am new to this whole video thing…it is not as easy as I thought. I will have to try and fix it at home tonight, and repost it again. I will also have to trim the lenght…it took way too long to upload. Sorry for the inconvenience.
