Cobia

I know that there is a good amount of Cobia fishing that goes on this time of year down around Beaufort. Anyone with experience catching them in and around Charleston?? Do they frequent the nearshore reefs like they do out of Beaufort. Any advice appreciated…

Stick around channel markers. I never think of passing a channel marker inshore when fishing for cobia. In my experience, that has never really failed me so I have always went with that. Also any change in depth you notice on the finder where there may be a hole, FISH IT! Wherever an obstruction is that splits or changes the current like a dock pole or a brigde is a great idea. Try chumming a bit and drop one of your back lines in the chum stream. They aren’t very picky fish at all, although my choice in bait would be sardines if you can get any or some kind of live bait. Keep in mind they have mouths similar to snook so small blue crabs may work. One of the biggest cobias I have caught were on 4 or 5 little, long dead, greenbacks so…I know they have been known to KILL plugs and any nearshore reef would be a good place to go as well, to answer your question!

Thats why they call it “fishing” and not “catching”!

They should be some around and there will be more and more as it warms up a little. I dought there is many nearshore right now as cold as the water is but could be wrong. Ive never seen as many as we saw off g town this fall diving they were everywhere and some monsters at that.

Usually they start biting on the Gulf Coast Apil time. Im sure the water has to warm up a little more for them to be in good numbers inshore as Freed-em said. About 65-70 degree I think. Go for it! You might get real lucky and hook a big one. Dont forget to post a report afterwards!!
