I am looking to do a little cobia fishing out of Charleston and am looking for tips. i.e Location, baits, tackle, techniques…etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are cobia out there in August (60 ft+ for the most part) but it’s difficult to specifically target them right now. The peak in inshore/nearshore waters is mostly May and June. Your best bet is to anchor over good live bottom or deep wrecks in the 100 foot range and chum like crazy. Big AJ’s are more likely in your slick, but you may get a shot. Large spinning rods (50-65# braid) and a big menhaden or a hogy bait work well. While you are there, you can pick up some nice bottom fish. Much easier to spearfish for them this time of year.

chum with crushed blue crabs…*pro tip!

Come back next June for the best action. Water temp is really hot and they have been hammered up and down the east coast for the past 2-3 months.

Thanks for the help guys.
