Cobia

Pops is coming to town last week of April - first week of May. We wanted to try something different then usual and try to go for some Cobia. Figuring we would take a charter out of Beaufort or Hilton head. Would that be to early for a good shot at one? Would the Rivers or out at the reefs be the best bet? Any advice is appreciated.

DON’T KNOW FOR SURE BUT SCDNR KEEPS COBIA SEASON IN THE BROAD RIVER CLOSED THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY ,OFFSHORE ITS OPEN…BE SURE TO CHECK REGS ; SEEMS THEY CHANGE EVERY YEAR ON COBIA…

Closed as to you can’t fish for them, or you can’t keep any. I thought it was the latter, though I may be wrong.

NOT SURE ; THE COBIA SITUATION HAS BEEN SCREWED UP FOR THE PAST 3-4 YEARS , INSHORE , NEARSHORE , NC TO FLA. , FEDERAL VS. STATES ;; OFFSHORE IS OK I THINK PAST 3 MILE …

Should be cobia around the Betsy Ross at that time and most likely 1 per person bag limit in fed waters.

I agree with Gail winds, the situation is screwed up. I’m not sure the regulations are even clear. What I understand is you can legally catch and keep them in federal waters. The problem is if the season is closed in state waters, and you get checked your in violation of the law, and could be fined. You have to come back through state waters to get back in. I would wait until state waters open then go find some, just to be safe. A fine would ruin a memorable trip.
