I understand to where a life jacket, especially when its cold, but thats just plan dumb to jump in the cold water on purpose even if its for a class/cause. Never understood those Polar Bear Club folk

I believe they jumped in that cold water so that people like me will think about wearing one.

They jumped in to show us what happens from thermal shock, then thermal exhaustion. Hit <50 degree water without a life jacket and you’ll be DEAD in 5 minutes, but not from hypothermia. Cold muscles / nerves simply don’t work and you drown.
