Over the past two years I run the battery just about every night. I switched up and started running around Colonial lake. Well, I was out running a few nights ago and saw this monster tailing. Huge. Went back after dinner the other night with the fly and saw him? tailing around the same spot. If you were out there you probably saw me throwing the fly around. Couldnt get him to do anything. Question: has anyone had any luck with the fly around the lake? I had a few stop and talk to me as I were casting and said they are very spooked and live bait usually produces. Who knows. Still was good practice.
What kind of monster? It may have been a Cookie Monster- I’ve seen children in strollers who throw bits of their cookies into the lake to " feed the fishies ". If so, perhaps a Chocolate Chip hatch imitation fly would do the trick…
Are there actually fish in Colonial Lake? I’m living downtown in a week or so and need some place to fish besides the harbor or Brittlebank. I won’t have a car.

there are some nice fish in that lake, I once saw a local jump in and try to catch a fish. If you use the right bait you could catch a nice mountain bike.
I don’t think that a whole lot of people ffly fish in charleston, there’s some but not a lot. And I’ve certainly never seen anybody throwin feathers in there… a good crab pattern might do the trick
Years ago I used to regularly go down there and throw my cast net. I almost always did well when the tide was up. I caught mullet, mud minnows, and lots of baby flounder. When the tide dumps out through the pipe into the harbor (you can find it if you look for it) you can also catch a bunch of shrimp there. Some very nice flounder hang out around that outlet as well. I didn’t try fishing in the lake, but I can tell you that there is a ton of shrimp in that lake at times, and some huge mullet as well. There are bound to be some reds, trout, and flounder in there as well. It was rare to see anyone else throwing a net in there and the folks that stopped to ask me what I was doing (don’t you know there is nothing in this lake!!!) were amazed when I showed them my little Igloo almost full of very nice sized shrimp. …just a thought…I would give it an earnest try with a fly that looks like a shrimp or mullet.

DNR has stocked it in the past for kids fishing tournaments/rodeos. A friend caught a 30+ incher in there once- gold spoon. A ■■■■■ of Japanese tourists surrounded him and started taking pictures. They sent him a copy of it from Japan.
I stopped and talked to a guy there the other night on a run. He had been throwing the cast night the entire time I had been there. He opened his cooler and the size of the shrimp he had wouldve made forrest gump’s mouth drop. They were huge. He also had 3 big size mullet. Another guy stopped and talked to me while I was fly fishing and said that the flounder he’s seen in the lake are like door mats.
Either last year, or the year before someone pulled a big red out of there…dont quote me on the size but I believe it was in the 40" range…There was an article in the P&C.

I remember seeing that. It sounds like some fish have been stuck in there for a long time. Does anyone remember when DNR had to pull a deer out of there?
Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
Yep it was in P&C think it was last year 45", Also to Bonzo’s statement, someone told me to NEVER eat fish out of that lake, didn’t tell me why, but I wouldn’t eat anything out of it.
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

It does have a pipe that runs directly under the road and into the harbor…for whatever that is worth. It can be closed off, but I’ve never heard of that happening. A 40" redfish would have no trouble navigating that pipe at high tide. …just sayin’
