Colorado Advise

I heading up to Golden for a long weekend near the end of may. Anyone know of a good guide in this area, I’m willing to drive. I also figure it’s a good excuse to buy a 4 or 5 wt freshwater trout / saltwater trout. Is this a good size rod for Colorado should I take my 8 weight? Any help would be appreciated.

I was stationed in Colorado Springs and evn the biggest lake trout I caught, about 20" was on a 6wt… unless you are hitting a salmon run I would say the heaviest you would need us a 6wt but you’ll be able to get by handily wiht a 4 or5 wt… Good luck to ya!

The Yampa river in Steamboat springs is a pretty nice fishery. Its pretty cool because you can catch nice size Trout and pike. I know there are a few guide services there. The 8wt might be overkill but 2 rods are better than one when traveling

Any of yall have a good 4-5 wt you might want to get rid of?
I have found one guide service but to use their equipment it’s $100 per day.
Needless to say I’m still looking and thanks for the help

Good Lord $100 a DAY??? wow after 2 days you could buy a pretty good set up… I highly suggest you go see Mike or Josh at the Charleston Angler… Is that a common thing? I have never heard of an extra charge to use the guides equipment… I thougth tthat was included in the prices you paid them…

Hey Grapeape, I guided on the Gunnison river for years, if the guide’s going to charge you to use his equipment find another guide. Late May can be tough up there because it should be full run off on a lot of rivers, spring comes late, especially this year with record snow. Try the Blue river near Dillon, the Arkansas good dryfly action, or the North Platte in the South Park area (yes from the tv show)

email me if you need more info.

I just moved here from boulder, and while the runoff will make some river hard to fish the Stagewater tailwater of the yampa river in Steam Boat springs is one of the best rainbow trout fishery in the west, well worth the drive (2.5 -3 hrs) also the Blue river in Dillion outside breckenridge has a tailwater that fishes good year round but gets alot of pressure. In estes park the Big thompson is a great river with LOTS of access. If you just want to fish for a quick afternoon Clear creek that runs through down town Golden has some little trout in it that are fun with a light rod. Hope this helps and good luck!!!

I was just in Utah a couple weeks ago and tried to do a little fishing. Was still pretty cool (-2 the day I left) and took an hour to get to my favorite hole on the Provo that is usually only about a 15 min walk. They had record snow levels this year and if it’s a warm spring most rivers will fast and muddy. I have never found the need for anything bigger than a 5wt and some times try to stick with the 3wt.

Good Luck
