Just got invited to go to Durango in October to hunt Elk for first time. Is my 270 enough gun?
Very small group. They tell me 100% success last year. I have 6 days of hunting.
I am pumped. To make it better it is with an old friend.
Ask what distance you’ll most likely be shooting. Personally I’d like a 7mm or .300 Win. Mag. I shoot a .270 130 grain for whitetail around here. I’d step up to a heavier weight bullet and re-sight it in keeping your shots under 250 yards if you take your 270. I wouldn’t recommend anything under 150 grain. Placement! For closer shots a 30/30 or .35 remington has taken many. your .270 will work!

.270 is perfect. You are better off practicing long range shots with your gun than you would be trying to step it up with a larger boar that you haven’t shot much. Elk are not a tough animal to kill and shot placement is key. 200 yards is not an uncommon distance to shoot out there or one could walk out at 20 feet. If the bull of a life time walked out at 3-4 hundred yards what are you going to do?? With that gun… I would shoot it. Choose your ammo / bullet weight accordingly, sight it in at 200 yards and practice shooting it at any distance you feel comfortable shooting at. Don’t believe the ballistic on the box or internet AND most importantly shoot it when you get to Durango!!! We are at a different altitudes and your ZERO will be different more than likely it will shoot high.

People kill Elk with a string and a stick all the time. 270 is way better than that. A tougher bullet might be a good idea over a more frangible bullet, but otherwise, 270 will kill an Elk if you put it in the right spot.
