Picked up a couple of bottles of Spike-It dye (red and chartreuse) a while back mostly to add some color to some white Magnum flukes. Going to give it a try this spring, so over the weekend I tested it on a few different baits and seems to adhere really well.
Anyone have any experience with this stuff? Sounds like it’s been around a while, but I’ve only ran across it recently.
Yep, it works quite well. Just don’t get it on anything you don’t want dyed, like your boat.
The chartreuse & the red are the only ones I’ve used, but I do use plastics that have the different colors.
I’ve found that the color changes works well sometimes, but not always, just like anything else. Never hurts to have options IMO.
Look up “Shawn Kimbro”. He’s written a book on light tackle fishing, primarily based on fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, but he’s an excellent all around angler. Shawn dyes plastics often for Striped Bass & swears by it.
Spike it also has markers for coloring plastic baits, that’s not as messy as the dip.
I’d use the markers sparingly. I’ve messed up some baits before with them. After a while in the tackle box the markers tend to run. Looks pretty bad when the gills I’ve drawn on a bait turn into a pinkish blob. Guess it’s all a learning process. I’ve been using the scented dyes for years on largemouth. They work very well.
Tim, I have been using it for quite a while to customize some of my bass (green fish for all you rockfish guys) lures. It will work quite well for you. In addition to the dyes, I would also use scented spray on attractants. I would re-apply the attractant about every 10 casts or so just to be sure. Probably overkill, but peace of mind for me. I’m sure they worked.
