Headed to Cola-town for the next few days for work. Is it worth bringing a fly rod along? I used to fish for stripers near the Gervais st. bridge back when I was in school, but I think they were running a little earlier in the spring. Any suggestions? I like the Saluda, Broad, and Congaree for their scenery, but have no idea what I would be fishing for right now. I’m a saltwater guy, so I’m pretty clueless up there.
Jay,
They (DNR) dropped a ton of trout into the Saluda this spring. I’ve never fished it but do a search of prior posts in this section and I remember a post with a couple of pics from the tailrace. An e-mail to the original might give you specifics. By the wya, how’s the married life treating you?

Here is a link from a while back. Follow the directions I give to some small rapids and you will catch fish.

My roomates and I have been fishing on and off near gervais st. bridge for striper all semester and have only had the occasional bite. I’ve seen plenty of them but just cant get them to take anything. We did see a guy catch two on the fly in the rapids infront of the bridge last week. A quick question, where else in cola can you throw the fly right now, other than where the three rivers meet in the middle of the city. saluda shoals??
Thanks for the info fellas. I’m staying on Lake Murray Blvd, so I headed to the lake with my 6wt. Ended up with a couple of shellcrackers on a popping bug. Saw one larger fish…looked like a striper, but I’m sure it was a largemouth considering where I was fishing. Threw a clouser at it with no luck. Might mess around at the bridge or the zoo tomorrow or friday afternoon before I head back to my pet redfish at home.
Roger, married life has been pretty awesome. Lots of hot meals and I still fish 4 times a week. Had a friend take the plunge this weekend…he’s got his feet propped up in Jamaica right now!
Shadowgrass, I still owe y’all a tailing trip in Georgetown. Our first run of tides were not as productive as down in Charleston. However, the fish are pretty fired up right now and the fiddlers are active in the grass. The next set of tides should be great.
Jay, You don’t owe me anything, but I will definitely take you up on the offer to chase some reds up in your neck of the woods. We have already gotten some good footage here in Charleston, but we won’t really be hitting it hard until I return from my honeymoon on June 9. Let me know when you have some dates, and we will try and get together. I just mounted a trolling motor on my boat, and that should help free up some shooting angles.
