Hey Y’all first post. I have been reading here for a long time and have been trying to dig up as much information as possible. I normally go to Lake Marion with the wife and 3 kids because it’s close. Really just looking to take the boat to some different scenery and maybe catch a few fish. I have never inshore fished. Roughly 45 minutes to get to Combahee or Bennett’s Point (less traffic and people) and 1 hour to Charleston area. I have a 1720cc Key West that I would be using. What landings do you suggest down there to put in on a Saturday that I wouldn’t loose my patience and belongings? Have any of you fished the Combahee area much with success? Any tips or pointers would be appreciated.
If you’re closer to Combahee, I would definitely stay out that way,Charleston area is way too crowded nowadays.Put in on Ashepoo where 17 crosses, pay daily fee or join the club.Saltwater and freshwater species are there as well as the Combahee where 17 crosses it.Welcome to the site.
Everyone keeps telling me they wouldn’t mess with Charleston area if I can go somewhere else. Would you use artificial baits or buy some shrimp and mullet to use? I bought some of the trout eyes and some of the artificial baits people on here have been using with success. Mainly going to target reds, trout, and flounder. Thanks for the help also, appreciate it!!
I know there is a landing at 17S where it crosses the Combahee, but man, the tide and currents really rips there. Just north of the Combahee salt marsh, there is a road that heads toward Wiggins…that road dead ends at some private plantation, but a dirt road to the right runs down a beautiful secluded boat landing that feeds to the north and secluded side of Whale Branch. I’ve seen a few vehicles down there from time to time, don’t really know how safe it is.
Bennetts point is on a creek that also feeds into Whale Branch.
If if were me…I’d look at Bennetts Point - it’s a throw back place lost in time, but with some people around of you need help.
(X Marks the Spot…don’t sure why, but there is a patch of trees planted in a ginormous x in the middle of the woods. Any body got a scoop on that?)

Ok I didn’t know that the current was fast at 17 landing. I see your pin for Wiggins Claim. I will hopefully try one of the landings out maybe this weekend. Thanks again Claim and sman!!
The the boat landing at Hwy 17 has a small dock and it’s often leaning one way or the other due to the strong currents. If you pick the right times at the tide…do-able. But of all the times I’ve passed that landing, I’ve never seen someone using the landing with a running tide.
These are pictures of the Wiggins Boat Landing (or what ever it’s official name is)
The sandy dirt road to the landing. Lots of beautiful oaks.
Overview of the top of the landing. There is no dock last time I was there. Looks fishy.

Fields point landing. No dock there, but that would be the closest run for trout or flounder other than Bennett’s point. Reds being caught in the combahee and asheepoo. Headed to Beaufort on 17 the landing on the left (asheepoo) is very well watched and will cost you $10. Not sure what boat you have but a tall t top won’t make it under the train trussle. Down the street is steel bridge landing , red fish and catfish to be had with shrimp on the bottom. Run down river to the first wood wall on right and try there or go up river around first curve and look for small creek run it up to a cross road and try that. Google earth it and look for were cockolds creek enters and fish the mouth of that. Load and unload on the outside lane and you won’t have trouble at any tide. I wouldn’t put in a pontoon there unless slack tide.
Both asheepoo and combahee are beautiful to just ride even if you don’t fish.
Don’t rule out running just a few miles more to greys hill landing, excellent fishing of all nature. This past weekend had good luck on whiting.
Claim yes that is a pretty area with the oaks and dirt road. Fred I have a 1720cc key west w/o top so that’s no problem and it drafts practically nothing. I had a guy tell me about cuckolds creek also and I will try the others you mentioned. I agree if nothing else it should be nice to take the family for a ride. Great info fellas and maybe I will see y’all on the water sometime. If y’all need any info on lake Marion let me know.
Does anyone know if the little cabin on the right hand side as you’re going out to the river is still there in Cuckold’s creek?Been a few years since i put in there, you wouldn’t believe the crappie we caught in there.

That landing is a little sketchy for me, and dang if that area is not full of logs and underwater obstacles! Not sure about the cabin, but there is a roofed raggy shed before the church. When the river level is down, you can catch some nice spot tail in that creek.
Finally got a chance to put in yesterday at steel bridge and current wasn’t bad at all. Real nice landing and run about 3 miles up freshwater side and roughly 8 miles down saltwater side for a ride. Nice river wife and kids enjoyed it. I fished a little bit but didn’t take much time just stopped along different areas that looked fishy with no luck. Thanks again for the help.
