Sorry guys. It’s the South Edisto River I was referring to. They end up in the same place. (via Fenwicks cut) Combahee is much better off than S. Edisto.

This is from the Post & Courier–

The Edisto River and other Lowcountry freshwater rivers have some of the worst levels of mercury contamination in fish in the country, a federal study released Wednesday shows.

Levels of mercury in largemouth bass swimming in the North Fork of the Edisto River rivaled those in fish found in polluted rivers next to Western gold mines, where mercury is a byproduct of the mining process, researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey found.

The study examined fish in 291 streams in the United States between 1998 and 2005. About a quarter of all the fish they sampled had mercury levels higher than the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe for human consumption.

Thanks for the correction baitball. I think I will stick with catch and release, for the most part. Big problem right now is just finding tome to go do some catch and release!

If you have a small boat and put in at the public landing on US-21 just outside of Yemassee you’ll see. Big sign on the bridge right next to some type of pipe that discharges some type of liquid indicating no swimming and a fecal coliform warning. However, I’ve eaten many redbreast and blue bream caught from 100’ UPSTREAM of the sign.

Spec, regarding access to the Cmb, I usually put in at the Dawhoo landing and will motor all the way to Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff as I found a couple of good spots along the way. Looking at Google map, I am not that far from the mouth of the CmB, correct? Is this a sensible route or would I be better off trailering from Hollywood to one of the landings, and if so, which one? I am not familiar with Public Landing, Steel Bridge, Schooner Channel, etc., etc. Thanks in advance, Mike.

I’ve fished Combahee (CmB) from above Public Landing to the mouth. That’s about 45 miles of river. CmB is a beautiful river with every type of inshore fish you can imagine, both fresh and saltwater. Like any river, there is a learning curve. I have been skunked plenty of times. But, I have also done well at times.

I usually put in at Steel Bridge to fish the lower river for redfish, flounder, and trout. I sometimes put in at Public Landing and run downriver 10 miles or so for redfish, then come back to the Public Landing area for freshwater panfish. Be careful from Auld Brass dock and above. There are lots of snags just under the water. You can see these when the tide is ripping, but they are hard to see near slack tides. The only drawback is the upper, freshwater section gets crowded on the weekends, especially with swimmers at Public landing after lunch. Best to fish early in that area and leave before lunch.

There are multiple connections from Combahee to the Wimbee area. Wimbee landing offers quick access to the lower Combahee through a “cut-through” in Schooner Channel. The Wimbee landing used to have a wicked dropoff on lower stages of the tide. I have not launched from there lately. I usually start redfishing in CmB after the July 4th crowds are gone, and fish there until the Broad River fishing picks up after Labor Day. I don’t like dealing with all the tiny sharks in

It was confusing to me too, Google has everything listed as harbor river. Steel bridge is the landing beside the new bridge built on hwy 17. Public landing : type in pub landing rd . Yourre a long way from the Dawhoo,I used to put in there a long time ago. Google claims its 48 minutes from Hollywood to the " public landing".I believe the official name is Colleton County public landing but Google shows it in the wrong spot.Hope this helps

The Hwy 17 bridge landing just outside Yemassee is a Johnboat/kayak shallow slope landing that is cut off from the lower river by lots of fallen trees. There is good panfishing above this landing for small johnboats.

Public Landing is a few miles downriver, at the end of Public Landing Road off Hwy 17. It is a good choice for you if you want to do some freshwater pan/bass fishing. This landing is 42 miles above the mouth of the Combahee. It is in the freshwater section. It is tidal, and the river is shallow on low tide in places for a few miles below Public landing. It is a good landing for larger boats, but has mostly johnboats/bassboats fishing panfish/FW bass. It is sometimes crowded with swimmers on summer weekend afternoons. To me, the area below Public Landing is just beautiful. It is worth a trip just to ride-n-see. Watch for underwater stumps & snags.

Brackish water fishing begins about 5 miles below Public Landing at what locals call the “Tea House”. It is a plantation boathouse.

Sugar Hill creek/landing is about 3 miles below the Tea House. It is not a good choice for folks coming from from Hollywood direction. It is just East of the junction of Twickenham Plantation road and State Rd. S 7-33 on Google maps. The landing is a unimproved johnboat/kayak type landing at the headwaters of Sugar Hill creek. It has a big parking lot. I have put my 21ft boat in there before, but there is a dropoff, and the creek just below the landing is super shallow at low tide and stump filled. There is good redfishing in the Combahee a few miles up and down from the mouth of Sugar Hill creek.

Steel Bridge landing is my favorite, and is probably the easiest access for folks coming from Charleston way. Go through Jacksonboro, take Hwy 17 toward Yemassee, cross the Ashepoo River, and look for the landing on the right at the far end of the Combahee River Bridge. This landing is 25 miles above the mouth of Combahee river. You can run upriver 15 miles or so to the upper reaches of brackish water, or you can run 15

Thanks for that link DH! I just learned that trimming fat and red lines will only reduce pcb’s but not mercury as it is stored in the muscle… learn something everyday.

Remember Grand-paw from Hee Haw? He said to put the fish in the freezer and cut off it’s tail and you would remove all the mercury. get it?

Depends on whether you have a valid fishing license, and not using dynamite, or a field crank radio to give them ole reds a buzz…

Best time of the year to dynamite fish at night is the Fourth of July, and New Years eve. So, I have been told…

My experience too

Yep, going tonight. Thanks for the SCDHEC advisory. I stand corrected. CmB is polluted. It is still beautiful! I’ll just do catch & release on Reds and eat Cow!

Leave a few for me, I’ll be on Harbor Island 8/1-8/5. Ride by and shoot me the bird, and I’ll give ya a Moon shot back…

I’ll be the guy fishing with the 15’ pvc pipe rigged with electric wire guides and a generator up in the dunes next to a designated turtle nesting site…

The tell tell sign should be the orange extention chord along the beach…

RBF

I don’t want to shoot any birds, and the only moon I want to see is the big harvest moon that makes the river so beautiful when I am nightshrimping!
