I’m seeking some reviews and help with the software Shipconstructor. Is anyone familiar with it. My semester project was building a ship using autocad but the director of Shipcontructor has donated me a subscription of their software which is used in autocad. How hard is this to use? I have 4 months to explore it and was hoping that someone could provide me insight in regards to if their is a huge time constraint here. All help is welcome!

Bunch of stuff on ShipConstructor on YouTube. You still sail the Laser?
AutoCAD can have as many plug-ins as they want and CAD still wont be on par with ProE, SolidWorks or a UniGraphics standard set up.
With that said, lots of nav archs and marine engineers use a wide variety of design software and AutoCAD is most definitely one of them.
If you want to toy around with new software by all means do it, no way it can hurt you. If you want to start learning the more commonly used software I would go with ProE, Solidworks or at least something that is parametric. FastShip is an easy to use parametric software good for hull definition and fairing which paired with Rhino can be a solid package.
Just my $.02, lots of opinions about which software is better/best. Companies are going to go with what works best for them, but that’s hard to plan for while in school. Where I work we use ProE, Rhino and AutoCAD. I like Rhino, my counterpart likes ProE, choose your poison.
“If you had to tell someone how good you are, then you probably aren’t that good”
I work for a DoD contractor and we have about 40 drafters currently using a combination of AutoCAD and Solidworks depending on what project we are supporting. We would prefer PROE due to the PDM that we have to interface with, but that decision was based primarily on cost of licenses and not ease of use.
Well if anyone would like to explore a new software and help someone in learning the ropes of autocad at the same time, shoot me a PM. I have a full version of ship constructor for the next 2-3 months and could use some help. Thanks!!!
Bump Bump, Just installed Shipconstructor and could use some help, not much different than cad. Just different surface tools. If you want to explore a new software that could potentially change your life give me a shout!!! thanks
