I want to redo the dash on my console. The previous owner’s setup leaves something to be desired. Since there are already holes cut in the console, I thought I would just make a replacement panel out of Starboard and then I could position the gauges the way I want them. I really think the contrast of black Starboard would look good against the white console but I have no experience with it. Has anyone used black Satrboard for such an application and how has it held up, has it faded? I am told Starboard works a lot like wood, what is the best method of cutting and will a router work to round over edges?
Thanks
I’m not sure about the black fading. I don’t think it would. A lot of e-box door frames are done in black.
As far as working with starboard, any woodworking tools will work with it. Circular saw, table saw, band saw, router, etc. Sometimes the saws will leave a feathery or fluffy edge which can be taken off easily with the edge of a knife or a file.
Hope this helps. If you need a hand with anything, give me a call.

My gauge panel was redone in black and its fine. Starboard is easy to work with like HB said normal wood working tools but I would use a router with a round-over bit in leui of a file or knife.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thanks Happy I appreciate the offer. The shape I am cutting out is a little odd so that is my biggest concern, not buggering up a perfectly good piece of starboard. It would be nice if I had access to a CNC machine but that would probably drive the price up a good bit and I have a limited budget.
Starboard is easy to work with and just measure once and cut twice. Or is it measure twice cut once?? ah hell just cut it.
Remember this 4200 nor 5200 will adhere to starboard like you would think it would. Just an FYI

A jig saw will work. If you want, you can come down to my shop and use my band saw. I’ve got a trim router too.

If you want something really nice check this guy out…

He did my dash for me: black, CNC cutouts, laser engraved w/ logo and everything for $65 which is about what you’re gonna pay for a piece of starboard. You draw out what you want, he’ll CAD it and send it to you for approval, and then cut it out. He uses nice materials, plenty thick, and the workmanship is fantastic.

Wow, that does look nice. Thanks for the offer Happy, I am still mulling over what (if any) gauges I want to add because right now all I have is a compass, tilt/trim and fuel gauge.
Rebel17…I called Scott at Vector, what started as a do it yourself w/starboard has turned into having Scott do a panel for me. For the quality of his work, the fact that it looks like OEM and the price, it makes sense to let him do it. As soon as I can figure out exactly what gauges I want to add, I plan on sending him a pattern and getting it done. Thanks for the heads up!
