Here is a video that I found of a guy on a paddle board fishing for sharks. Since you are just about as exposed and vulnerable on a kayak. Do you think this is cool or just plain dumb?
I agree. I believe I heard them say “you don’t even have pliers”. He could fall of or accidentally get bit by that shark. I am all about having fun on the water but there is a line between fun and just asking for trouble.
Very stupid, in my opinion. No PFD (in sight anyway), No pliers or knife apparently. How would he cut the line if needed. Looked to me like total disregard for the shark’s life or his own. Not Impressed!
Plain stupid and they should never given this jackhole any publicity in their site… Too bad the shark didn’t pull him off the board and thin down the recessive genes in that pool…
I think its awesome, this dude is known for big game yak fishing in CA. He had his buds nearby in case things went south. Nikon, did you not get hugged enough when you were little, always so negative!
I have mixed feelings too. Is the guy a bit crazy? sure. Would I do something like that? Doubt it. You have to give the guy some credit for landing that thing on a glorified surf board. Certainly challenging. But he definitely wasn’t prepared. Keep in mind he’s in California and he probably just came from a visit to his local dispensary.
Here’s my reasoning on my comments.
I think it would be a cool to get a hookup like that, but I kind of relate this to my military training and being prepared.
PFD = Body Armor, you have to have personal protection in a dangerous situation.
Knife (or other line cutting tool) = M-4 , again, personal protection doubt he wanted to loose the rod/reel in a bad situation but that’s what would have happened. That wouldn’t look cool in a video;-( Of course if that had happened the video wouldn’t have been posted and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
I also have my reservations about a first aid kit availability if something had happened. A couple band aids wouldn’t help where they were.
If you have to wait for your buddy to bring you any of these things in a bad situation that’s just plain stupid.
I think with the growth of our sport that this video it sends a really bad message. Just my .02 cents.
AS for the PFD stuff, paddleboards don’t need them in the ocean.
I didn’t have audio when I watched it, do we know he didn’t have a knife in the pocket of his board shorts?
That is not “OUR” sport anyway. That is a fringe of the sport, that people have been doing on surfboards on the left coast for a LOOONG time!
How much of a first aid kit do you guys normally carry out? (I know that doesn’t make it right, I could have used one the other day myself after an oyster incident)
He was a bit casual handling that shark once he landed it, but other than that, looks cool to me!
I think the guys in the other hobies looked pretty well outfitted, and I don’t think this was anyone’s “First Rodeo”. I’m sure the guy was well supported and knew what he was doing.
Plain stupid and they should never given this jackhole any publicity in their site… Too bad the shark didn’t pull him off the board and thin down the recessive genes in that pool…
DD,
If this was SC would a PFD be required? I don’t know the laws on that one. I thought SC required them.
I say our sport because I believe SUP’s will be rounded into the yak/canoe club, at some point. Those guys may be extreme now, but it affects the perception of a lot of beginners that may watch the video. Just because they’re left coasters don’t make it right, or safe.
BTW, I always carry an emergency kit and if I personally went out hunting sharks I would bump that up to include a tourniquet. You are pretty experienced and you said you could have used one the other day. What makes me believe they were more prepared?
again, just my .02 cents.
PS: we’ll probably need to discuss this over a beer to get final resolution
