Cooler full plus excitement

Finally made it down Sunday to the harbor and tried a little free casting. Unfortunately, I lost my brand new 8’ taped net on something. We were out by Ft Sumter and on about the 8th cast, I hooked onto something that wouldn’t let go:frowning_face:. Oh well, after tying off to the boat cleat in full reverse and getting back nothing but the rope we fished a little and set the poles before dark and coolered out in about 4 hours.

On the last pole of the third run, I cast and felt something wasn’t right. My buddy came to the front of the boat to help me pull in a 3’ stingray in the net.[:0]

We fully expected to lose or tear up another net but managed to get the ray untangled without damage.

I’ve never heard of this before but dam, what an exciting and somewhat disappointing day. I guess the shrimping gods had a little mercy on us and allowed us the limit to make up for the net.

Keep the extra rope. I double up my castnet ropes with old ones all the time.

First, Most, Biggest

Good job with the full cooler! We managed 12 shrimp after 3 runs! No Shrimp, lots of bait!

I caught a stingray about that size deep holing the harbor a couple of weeks ago. I did not realize I had him in the net until I got him up to the surface. Luckily it came out of the 10 foot net easily.

I caught a 3’ stingray in my net Firiday afternoon in Murrells Inlet. Took me 20 mins to get him out of the net and 30 mins more to get the barb that broke off out of the net. It tore two small holes in my brand new net. Caught 2 smaller Rays while free casting earlier in the week.

I got a HUGE cownose ray in BB 2 years ago. It was honestly closer to the 4’ range. I got it in the boat, and my buddy, who isn’t salty, had never seen such a thing. He was flippin’ out. I took care of it and we went back about our business. Made for an interesting catch; that’s for sure!

A little something to know if you ever get hit by a stingray barb: use hot water to denature the venom. NOT ICE.

Clean a bucket as best as you can, get some water from the water pump pee and immerse the injured part. Then head to the hill for some hotter water or get to the ER.

Remember…do not use ice, it will make things much, much more worse.

2x on hot water for a sting. I caught a big one out in the sound in a brand new net a few years back. It freaked out when I pulled him in the boat. Ripped a huge tear in my net and managed to stick me twice getting him out the net. FWIT I still got and use that net. Just has 150 stitches in it - net has wisdom and has caught a bunch of shrimp.
