Cooling system ? Tohatsu MFS25A, 2004

I’ve had this motor for about a year. When it cranks, it does not pee immediately. it takes about 3-4 minutes and most of the time you have to rev it higher than idle even then. I’ve had Johnson, Evinrude, Mercury and Yahama motors in the past and have never experienced this. I recently bought and installed a new thermostat after cleaning out the passage all I could around the thermostat in case it was sticking due to crud. The new thermostat changed nothing. When it startsto pee, the pee stream is strong and hot, almost to hot to put your hand in. This is different than any other motor I have (Yahama and Honda). This motor runs good and cranks easy. It only does it on a cold start. Can someone knowledgable with a Tohatsu tell me if this is normal or can anyone suggest a possible cause? Thanks in advance.

The water pump forces water through the cooling system. Your impeller is probably worn. See this:

Check for blockage. I had a 2012 Tohatsu 20hp and it pee’d from the start. I may be wrong but I don’t think the pee stream is affected by the thermostat. In other words through the thermostat in not the only route the pee stream takes so the thermostat can’t hold back all the stream.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.
