Landed a small Cobia (18"), in the Cooper, pretty close to the harbor on Sunday. I was very surprised by this. Anyone else had a similar experience? Or is this more common than I realize?
Pretty cool but This is a fishing forum so if you don’t have any pictures/proof…
I’d say it’s pretty rare. There are no cobia in SC.

We used to catch quite a few shorts like that while trout fishing, but not many lately. That is a good sign that they are reproducing in the area. Release it carefully please.

I’ve caught a few juvies, maybe three or four in the last ten years in the cooper. Never in any other rivers though.

I don’t say anything I can’t back up
Edit: For clarification, this is not the Cooper River. I’ve never fished in the Cooper.

quote:Yes, I've caught all kinds of "baby" fish in the rivers and marshes around Savannah with a hook, cast net, and minnow trap. It is so cool to see an exact replica of a grouper in miniature. I don't know how they got there but I know they're there. I'm not a picture taker and never considered a camera a necessity when I went fishing. The Old Man and The Sea doesn't have any pictures in it does it?

Thanks for all the ■■■■■■■■.
Friogatto,I didnt feel an 18" Cobia warranted a picture. And it certainly didnt warrant me, wearing a glove to handle it.

It ain’t all about you. The glove is to protect the fish, not me I’ll grab a shark, king, cuda or wahoo bare handed, but I like to use a wet glove on juvenile fish, or anything else to be released, it protects their slime. They need their slime to protect them from diseases and infections.

Might be a juvie that was released from the Waddell Mariculture facility in Bluffton.

Did someone say there are no cobia in SC? Do whuuut?
No matter how many variables I have control over, I never expect a bite. I only hope.
Nope, no cobia in SC
MDaddy, I do what I can to have fish for tomorrow, and our children and grand children’s tomorrows. At least my son had some good experiences with them Not sure if my grand children will.

I got to believe they will. There’s some guy just like you in the next fishing place. The more the better for our kids…and their kids. This MB is a great way to promote the future…everyday is a fresh start.
There are some pretty good BS artists on here, but really just wanted to see a cobia picture with Charleston in the background.
The channel markers along the shipping channel outside of the jetties are all loaded with them this year. While catching bait yesterday, we saw half a dozen of them

I caught a juvenile cobia, about 10 inches or so, in the Folly River a couple of years ago. Posted it on here to figure out what it was…searched the web and the site and I couldn’t find the post, but it’s here somewhere. Have yet to catch one in the Cooper though.

those cobia at the cans are [in this redneck’s experience] fun to watch and hard to catch. i’ve tossed lures and freelined baits at em. they ignore those. toss a live loose pogy and they vacuum it up like a fatkid on a KFC 3 piece.
My brother has always said that the Cobia come back down Broad River
after they spawn further up the river .I have sween one in Sept.
