Corrosion

Which outboard engine manufacturer makes the most corrosion resistant outboard for use in saltwater, both internal and external components?

One that doesn’t use raw water for cooling.
Maybe a 2hp air cooled engine, otherwise they all corrode, they all have had different problems, none of them really cover corrosion under warranty. Maybe those mud engines?

No one can answer this because by the time the engines are proven (20yrs or 4000 hours of saltwater use, they are too old and have been replaced by something new.

Your questions should be…

What (size)hp engine from (year) through (year) has had the least amount of corrosion issues?

All of them. I ran a 2001 115 HP 2 stroke Evinrude for over 5 years w/o any break downs, A 2006 18 HP Tohatsu to date w/o any break downs and a 2010 150 Yamaha to date w/o any break downs. I personally think its all in the Preventive maintenance and what you do at the end of the day that keeps them running. Hope I just didn?t jinx myself.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Flush and rinse with freshwater after EVERY exposure to saltwater. I have an 03 yamaha that other than the tilt/trim motor, looks almost new.

I have never seen the internal corrosion issues that Honda and Suzuki both have, happen on a Yamaha, or mercury.

fresh water flush an wash down.

I would say Yamaha. I own a Merc Saltwater optimax and it is eaten up with corrosion on the outside. No telling what the inside looks like. It has been well cared for also.

You have to change out the sacrificial anode on all outboards every couple of years. That way you should not have much problem. Don’t and they all rust.

Mercury has the strongest warranty against corrosion. 3 years instead of 1 like the others. Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily higher quality, just better warranty.

Yamaha is notorious for corrosion issues on the exhaust manifolds in there early four strokes. 02-06 before they really made any fixes.

this is true, but it was isolated to a specific motor and a specific year range, and the problem was corrected.
the issues with Honda and Suzuki are across the entire motor lines

Can you be more specific on the Suzuki corrosion?
Anything I can look for?
2008 DF140

Edit:
I assume you are referring to other corrosion issues than the steel plug in the engine holder limited to 2008 and older 4 strokes. That issue was fixed in 2008.

on the 140, the oil cooler corrodes from the inside
the lower cylinder corrodes where the head meets the block
the tstat housing corrodes the mating surface at the block, etc

Thanks Chris
Always a wealth of info.
Greatly appreciated.

What are the newest Suzuki models you have seen issues with, Chris? I have not heard of problems on Suzuki’s or Yamaha’s that were made more recently than about 07.

Yamaha owners who discovered the huge problem with exhaust corrosion only when they were outside of their warranty period would not say a problem ever got corrected. The opposite is what they’d say.

Thanks to that, trying to sell an older F225 is almost as hard as trying to sell a vintage poptimax or ficht isn’t it?

There had to be a class action lawsuit brought against Yamaha by owners of 2000-2005 F225 owners because Yamaha refused to take action to correct a concealed design defect. The defect was unavoidable corrosion in a critical area.

This has been brought up on here before.

Yamaha and Suzuki both exclude normal deterioration or corrosion from warranty coverage to various extents depending on whether you’re a lawyer or engineer reading the words. Mercury’s warranty is stronger, as someone pointed out above. Not sure what Honda says.

I will take my chances with my Suzuki. Anodes aren’t hard to change.

While on the corrosion issue, what do y’all think about flushing with Salt-away??

Let me expand on this, pull boat out of water, run on muffs till thermostat opens then the salt-away.

Is the lemon worth the squeeze, as the saying goes??

Thanks

you are correct
Yamaha excludes normal deterioration, they will not cover your water pump, but they will cover just about everything else
and you are correct again
Suzuki excludes corrosion due to exposure to saltwater and Yamaha does not make that exclusion

we are not a Suzuki dealer anymore so I don’t see anything still under warranty
(We were never actually a dealer for Suzuki, we did all of the warranty work for Boatline boats when they were in business, and that’s who I went to Suzuki school through)
don’t get me wrong, the Suzuki is a great motor and if they stood behind their product like Yamaha does, they would be unstoppable, but in my personal experience dealing with Suzuki, I would not buy one. but to each their own.

saltaway is good stuff
not very expensive
yes
its worth the squeeze
