I’ve noticed two things about my last 2 pair of costa’s.
After several hours i’m going to get a headache just behind my ears.
The soft rubber they are putting on there frames will peel off and bug the crap out of me and after super glueing back to frame will still peel off again.
My bro’s seen this same peeling issue with his costas as well.
Great lenses, not so great quality of frame. And the 580 glass is sooo much more durable and scratch resistant it ain’t even funny.
I’ll be looking at Smith’s and MJ’s for my next pair.
I use my prescription Costas in the car for driving. Like yours, the rubber on the frames has completely come off. They used to hurt behind the ears until the rubber was removed. Now they fit and feel fine.
I use cheap polarized sunglasses for the boat. To many broken, smashed, lost in the drink etc…to spend big bucks on.

I followed similar path over the years with Ray-Ban, Maui Jim, and now Costa’s (Revo’s if you want go a little further back in the 80’s!). I never really took to Oakley’s over the years due to lens durability, my personal opinion was that they scratched easy, but that may be an unfair bias since a fairly old bias. Oakley has always gone non-glass for safety.
What sold me on switch to Costa a few years ago (from Maui Jim)…ability to clean the lens (easily) when hit with salt spray. I can grab a towel or t-shirt and wipe the Costa’s clean, not smeared, clean. I know, shouldn’t do that but have done for 2 years on the same pair of Brines without one scratch. And they don’t even have the glass lens.
A few years back when I got my first pair of Costa’s, had similar discussion with some friends that are equally sunglass-crazed, one of which is an eye doctor. We passed around each other’s sunglasses and compared/discussed. We all agreed that Costa optical quality was best (all models were comparable price/quality for the brands). Everything else - fit, style, etc - is individual to the user and we all had our own opinion, of course!
Most every pair of sunglasses (various brands) that I have bought needed some level of customized fitting or required some level of break-in to get past some pinching. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t stay on my head because they fit too loose.
Sun kills me, makes me squint causing headaches. So, I wear sunglasses all the time, even when overcast (or I’m squinting). I like different lens types for different situations so I keep a couple different types nearby most of the time. Glad to see that Smith has received some good props on here. I’ve been close to trying them but have not (yet). Since I like to have multiple styles/types around, I’m always looking for a more economical brand with good quality to mix in with the higher-end/cost. I’ve been looking at Wiley-X brand and will most likely give those a try next (have tried them on at Bass
Costa’s… with my prescription and bifocals. Crazy expensive & worth every dime.
Agree 100%. Just got my first pair this winter (left over Flex money). I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to buy a real pair of sunglasses. What a difference. I always used the sunglasses that fit over my prescription glasses and thought they worked great…until I got my pair of real sunglasses. The frames fit my head like a glove without being too tight right out of the box, maybe I’m lucky. Got the Cablz to go on them so I don’t lose them.
I have Costas and like them a lot. Has anyone had this happen: my lenses seem to have a coating or delamination at the edges near the frames. You can see it in the coating. I’ve never tried returning them for repair but I guess I should? Another question is: these lenses are essentially gray (got them as a gift). I’d rather have amber lenses. Will they swap the lenses if asked when sent back or charge me to do that? Thx
Optiker - My brother’s costas had the same problem. He sent them in and they sent them back to him with new lenses. All he paid was s&h. Don’t know about changing the color of the lenses but seems to me they would do that for you.
I currently have triple tails with prescription in them and like them a lot but was thinking about trying out Smiths. Does anyone know where I can go that has a good selection I can try out?

x2…same deal happened to me a couple of years ago on some CR39 lens…
Optiker mine did the same thing. They said it was due to cleaning them with Windex and the ammonia was causing the separation in the layered lense (400 & 580). This is explained on their website in the “care for your glasses” section and is not covered under warranty. I sent mine in to repair or replace the lenses and they sent me a brand new pair of Harpoons at no cost even though not covered under warranty!!! Now this is how you take care of your people.
Got drunk one nite and woke up with one busted lense (and under someone’s porch) in a pair of Brines. NOT COVERED. Sent them in and boom…two new lenses at no cost! Best shades made IMO.
The oils from your skin will, over time, deteriorate the rubber. It does it faster if you use sunscreen and bug spray. I am sure everyone does one of those at times. This is probably the issue you are having guys. They will replace the arms for like 15 bucks. When i lived in Athens, GA there was a store that sold costa parts(kums sunglasses) and still does i think!

I work at a golf course so I’m outside all day every day. I’ve been a maui jim guy for a long time. I like them because they have the darkest lens I can find. I go with the glass lens because I thought the plastic ones scratched too easily. I’ve tried oakly, rayban, and a couple others over time but I haven’t tried costas.
I can’t go outside without my sunglasses… period. I wont lose them because I know exactly when they aren’t there
From what I’m reading I’ll be checking out some costas real soon. However, if they lens’ aren’t as dark as the mj’s I can’t go with them.
Anyone else wear there glasses in the rain while they are driving? I think it cuts down on the glare and makes dark objects stand out better… more visible.
Smith optic are by far some of best optics on the market. They are far better than Costa, Natives, etc. Go to there website click on the guide tab- select face size- lens material-lens coverage. This is very helpful in narrowing down the styles and lens materials. They have awesome optics, you will be able to see fish your buddies can’t see. i have the Guides Choice and the Undertow. By far the best on the market.
Kaenon are the best glasses I have found. They will replace the lenses if you scratch them or have any other damage for up to 2 yrs. Costa only warranties the frame and they have the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Screw Costa Del Mar I will never own another pair.
Yes they will replace the lenses that are manufactured incorrectly but you still have to pay for shipping to correct their mistake. Kaenon are better lenses, frames and company in general.
If I found a pair of brand new Costas and could not find the owner. I would sell them on e-bay and buy anything else.
All you guys who are complaining about costa’s warranty obviously didnt buy or bring your costa’s into Jackson Davenport on King St downtown. I have had the lenses replaced, new frames when I have broken them, etc. and he takes care of you. Always have had glasses back in the same week. I went in last week with a broken frame and he didnt have the same frame in so he popped the lenses out and put them in a brand new black frame until the tortise frame came in. A+ service and he does all work in shop. give them a visit.
Just sent my TripleTails in for service, we’ll see. BTW they said warranty only covers the original lenses, changing the lens will cost full price ~$80. Oh well, I still requested a change in my repair form. Wont hurt to ask
I love my Oakleys. . . I bought a pair of Canteens before my first deployment to the desert 4 years ago never looked back! The sand and sun makes that place INCREDIBLY bright I couldnt look 10FT infront of me without them. They took a beating as well. I use them for fishing now, no problems at all. I did try vinmans Costa’s on last friday they are nice!
