Costa Rica Anyone?

Anyone interested in going to Costa Rica for some fishing? I’m thinking about trying to put a trip together for February or March. Right now I’m just trying to judge interest. Looks like air and hotel for a week would be about $1,000. Charters vary depending on the size of the boat but 26’ CC’s range between 700-1000 for a whole day.

Costa Rica has always been on my bucket list. Unfortunately, not on my current “can do” list. Let us know how it is, I hear great things.

My son and I were thinking Panama in february. You may be able to talk us into Cosata Rica as we’ve not been to either. I assume you’re going to the Pacific. We’ll follow the post.

Definitely the pacific. Thinking the Jaco area. If anyone has been there please give some insight. My family owns a travel agency so I’ll ask them. Plus any commission they would earn would come off the cost per person. They are good about that stuff.

Jaco is expensive try Quepos!

Thanks for the tip on Quepos. Is it easy to get to? The reason I was looking at Jaco is it’s only an hour or so drive from the airport.

Jaco is probably closer to 2 hours from San Jose Airport that 1. Quepos is probably another 1.5 -2 hours farther. Their roads aren’t like I95 or anything, although most aren’t bad.

I like Jaco, specifically Los Suenos. For 3 or 4 guys you can rent a condo there very reasonable. Less than getting motel rooms and a lot more comfortable. Plus Jaco has the world famous Beetle Bar, don’t tell the wife  The Los Suenos folks will pick you up at the airport and deliver you to the resort also. No need to rent a car. Fantastic place, fantastic fishing, great people!

Don’t tempt me, my wife would be mad if I went without her. She’s been in the Beetle Bar:imp:

I read about the beetle bar. Not the type of thing I’m into but I’m sure my buddy would love it. In fact, I think it’s the reason he wants to go. I guess what happends in Costa Rica stays in Costa Rica. I’d rather hook a rooster fish and some billfish than spend some bills putting the rooster in some hookers.

Jaco is a disgusting place. Herradura is nicer because of the Los Suenos resort. Much cooler towns and culture is on the Nicoya Peninsula, quepos, and the Osa Peninsula. Jaco has good surf but the beach is disgusting, very touristy place. Its worth the extra time to make it to quepos or you can take a ferry from the beach at herradura to the Nicoya Peninsula, however the offshore charter boats are not as prevelent as quepos. Just remember you get what you pay for. Dont cheap on on a charter. Its a once in a lifetime opportunity and make it worth remebering. let me know if you have any more questions I spend a month and a half all over Costa last summer.

strip…strip…FISH ON!

I vacationed (not fished) in Costa Rica 7 years ago and loved it. We went to Panama last year and was appalled. I enjoyed seeing the canal, and wanted to see what the whole expansion thing was about that will be bringing in the $$$ to Charleston. Even though they have trash collection, they throw their trash out their windows when driving down the road. We stayed in Playa Coronado which is a gated area and is safe, but the surrounding areas looked questionable. Down town was cool, but the beach/volcano experience in Costa Rica was way better. The Pan American highway in Costa Rica can be lethal. Went flying off the road to avoid a wreck going back to San Jose.

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

This is a long shot, but wanted to throw this out. I have fished in Kona Hawaii on the Big Island several times. Young Bobby Cherry will take you out for the day for $400 on the Cherry Pit. I have hooked into large yellow fin ahi and huge blue marlin. My buddy landed a 900 lb marlin a few years back. You can get inexpensive rooms in Kona. Fish till 2:30, hit the beach, dinner and a local bar, then stumble to your room, pretty reasonably. I highly recommend going out with Bobby, he will hook you up and works his tail off. His boat is not huge, but definitely worth the price. Me and a buddy go with him and it’s great. A 3rd fisherman, you’d be fighting for the shade spots because it’s brutal by 9:00 am. Just throwing it out.

Check out www.queposfishadventure.com Headed down to get married in February in Quepos and have booked a few days with Capt. John.

Also, I have been to Los Suenos and stayed in a condo there. Very reasonable on price for a small group. While Los Suenos is a world class resort and marina it just doesn’t have the Costa Rica feeling. Jaco is a dirty tourist town. We had fun there but its not the reason I go to Costa Rica.

Quepos is still touristy but you have manuel antonio national park right there to. If you want to you can make a trip to Domincal while staying in Quepos. Its my favorite place to go in Costa Rica. Its about 40 mins north of Quepos.

You don’t want to go to Jaco it is similar to going to Folly. I would go further south.

I took a guys fishing trip several years ago to CR and experienced some of the best fishing if my life. 100 plus lb. sailfish are all over the place. Most of the boats run out of Quepos or Lon Soenos resort just outside if Jaco. I thought Quepos was pretty trashy, Jaco is better but over run with prostitutes. If I was going for a guys fishing trip I would stay in Jaco. If your taking the wife, stay in Manuel Antonio. Manual Antonio is pretty Americanized now, but is nice. Jaco is much cheaper a a perfect guys fishing trip.

For fishing, you are probably better off hooking up with a charter for a couple days. Don’t discount some of the guys with pandas hanging out by the beach. That is a nice 1/2 trip and we still killed the sails.

If memory is correct, Jan and Feb are the best months for sails.
