I’m heading to Los Suenos during the last week of August for my honeymoon, and my wife and I are planning on taking at least one charter. Honestly, we will definitely take one together and I may take one more by myself.
I know many of you guys have gone, and I’ve actually talked to some of you about it (thank you!!), but I wanted to open up the question to everyone. It seems like it’s not quite the right time of year for any species of marlin, but I would still be happy with catching a sailfish. I don’t know much about targeting roosterfish, but I would love to catch one of those too. I’m sure there are several other species that would be a blast that I don’t really know much about.
I guess I have a few questions:
First, how far out do those guys typically run for billfish? After our last misadventure (http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=155305), I don’t think my fiancee wants to go much more than 10 miles or so. I know it would make her feel better to be able to see at least the tops of some mountains. If billfish are too far away, I might do the offshore trip on my own and do a roosterfish trip with her.
Second, what fish would be fun to target out there? I know I would have a blast going for Roosters and bills, but what am I missing? I know very little about the life out in the Pacific.
Finally, what charters would you guys recommend? I know this kind of goes with my second question, but I need all the info that I can get!
Sorry for the long winded post, and thanks in advance for the help!

I went late January and we ran 18 miles one day, only caught 2, and ran 23 miles the next. We were not running that far offshore mind you, just that far from the port.
Jumped a black marlin, went 3/4 on sails, and got my first roosterfish further north in guanacaste. We went out with costa rica sport fishing charters (search captain menedez). I think they mainly fish in the gulf de papagayo, but you may send him an email. I know he has multiple boats who are willing to pick you upset the resort you are staying at.
Contact Capt. Carlos on the Wingman. You WILL catch good fish, and he is fluent in English. Boat isn’t as big as others (cheaper) but has plenty of shade and set up to fish hard.
He is on facebook along with Wingman Charters. Been doing it for a while and is always good to anyone I have sent to him. We fished on his rig for two days in a row and were really happy.
I’ve also fished with Capt. Carlos. Couldn’t ask for better. He knows his business.

You can see the mountain tops from at least 20 miles out.

We did very well with tuna and fair with wahoo last July. Also caught my first roosterfish. They said it was slow for sails, but we caught several, big ones! Pacific sails are much larger than ours. And a good variety of bottom fish, not many of which I recognized.
I would pack a travel rod too. You can walk north from Los Suenos Marina and fish off the beach.

We saw a couple of huge whales jumping, a very cool sight
