Costa Rica tips

My wife and I planned a last minute trip to Costa Rica. We’ll be there next week, and will be on the pacific coast in Jaco from the 29th-31st of January. Looking for ANY recommendations on inshore or offshore fishing charters in Jaco or surrounding area.

We used Costa Rica Dreams, booking office located on the Los Suenos Marina dock, a couple of times. Caught a bunch of fish[:0] Big ones…those Pacific sails are bigger than our marlin! I’d show you a picture but photobucket is down right now for some reason. We hooked 23 sails in one day, and 3 marlin, and 2 wahoo, and some tuna! Was very happy with them.

When you walk down the main street of Jaco there will be a dozen shops and booths selling fishing charters. I would avoid all those. There will also be quite a few folks selling contraband, or fake contraband, and others selling sex. Prostitution is legal, age is 18, and they don’t care if your wife is with you or not. I don’t know it’s current status, but the Beetle Bar in Jaco used to be about the largest cat house in Central America. Interesting place and my wife was a sport

And if you’ve never been, do a jungle zip line trip! Amazing :sunglasses:

Edit: photobucket is back up…

Don’t come back from Coata Rica with out going off shore! Like Larry said, there are a lot of boats for charter out of Jaco and Los Suenos. A lot of time you can split a 4 person charter with another couple! There is a nice bar on the beach that plays S.C. shag music. This is the best time of year to be there for large sails and at least 10 hookup a day! Goo d luck and have a great time!

I split one charter with a fellow from Miami that I met at a blackjck table the night before, at the Marriott casino. I had already booked the trip and was going fishing even if it was just me, but it worked out great for both of us. I couldn’t have reeled in all those fish by myself anyway:face_with_head_bandage:

Good thread. Heading to guanacaste in October and plan to fish offshore one day and nearshore one day. Going for a week. Staying at Riu Guanacaste

Thanks for all the tips, everyone…and keep em coming. We don’t leave until Monday. At this point it looks like offshore may not be possible unless we find a boat that has another couple looking to split cost. If we cant find that then we’re planning to go nearshore/inshore for roosterfish, which I expect to be a not-so-bad alternative.

Place is awesome

Met some nice folks shareing charters! On one trip in Tabago had two young topless women from Denmark in the boat with some homemade rum . There husbands were with them! Nobody fished they just rode and suned and made me work the lines!

Try Carlos at wingman and see if he has any availability. I have never fished on his boat but he has fished on our boat that’s there with us and he is great. Email is hihook1@hotmail.com. I also have another contact I will pm you info on and you can see if he can hook you up. He is currently not running a boat there but works at the local tackle shop outside of Los Sueños and fished with us last week. Bite really went off this week when we were leaving we went 3-3 on sails one day and then 2-4 with a striped Marlin and a sail. The day we left a buddy of mine practice fished and fished the tournament and they released 32, 16,17 & 17 sails in 4 days. Also, if your staying in Jaco go eat at Tsunami sushi on the main road. It’s upstairs and you will not be disappointed.

I can not say enough good things about them… good equipment… drinks and sandwiches, fruit, chips all included.

Boat is not a yellowfin, but you can see pics of it on the website. The wife I and used them and were flat wore out by 1pm catching sailfish. You can get the boat to yourself ($850)for what the cost was to get a boat for the day out of los suenos ($2200).
Quepos is about an hour and 15 minutes south of Jaco.

The bottom line was these guys worked hard to put us on fish… Def the best bang for your buck.

Good Luck!

I had a great time with these guys when I went out – they do everything they can to make sure you are satisfied with your trip. They are out of Quepos, which is close to an hour from Jaco.

One thing though, a lot of boats down there don’t have EPIRBs on board. I brought my own PLB with me – not sure who it would call if something went wrong, but at least I would be broadcasting something. Just something to think about. Have fun! It’s awesome down there – I can’t wait to go back one day.
