Things started of slown cold and windy in the ICW, it was my buddys birthday so we stuck it out and did pretty good…got 4 in the boat and missed at least 5 that i remember, few never completely hooked up and 3 popped off in the oysters!
Once we got these 2 in the boat for a pic before being released as i was taking the pic my buddy was yelling at me the rod behind me was going off!

that one got cut on oysters then it settled down for half hour or so and once again it went off!

pretty good day i might add…all caught on fresh cut mullet tails right next to live mullet…go figure…

First of all, nice fish. Now, since I know someone will come along and say what I am about to say, I’ll be the jerk and take a bullet today. If you plan on releasing fish after a photo, you may not want to hold them by the gills. I am no expert but seeing as how they need them to breath, you stand a good chance of damaging the gill plates thus making it harder for them to survive once they are released.
Just my .02 worth.
You read my mind DFreedom. At least when holding them, support them from the underside. Holding them upright by the mouth and/or gills has been proven to have negative effects on the fish. But as DFreedom said, good for you and nice fish! Glad to see someone out catching some reds

notes taken…not trying to justify but there is a good spot to hold em by in there and not fold or mash the gills especially when they are over slot fish there is plenty of room…and all fish swam away lively as could be…never had a dead fish on a stringer either lol

A little excerpt from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Redfish catch, hold and release - Best Practices
The following guidelines outline voluntary management practices for tournament anglers and organizers to use when catching, holding, and releasing redfish during tournaments. These basic guidelines increase the chances of survival of fish caught by hook and line.
Catch and release
Avoid using stainless hooks. These hooks do not rust out if a fish is gut-hooked and you have to cut the line.
Land your fish quickly.
If you are not placing your fish in a livewell, leave your fish in the water during release.
Use a de-hooking device to remove hooks. Using needle-nose pliers may injure a fish's mouth. If the fish is gut-hooked, cut the line and do not attempt to remove the hook.
When releasing a fish that has been held in a livewell, release the fish head-first.
Revive fish by moving them forward (not back and forth) in the water to promote water flow over the gills.
Handling
Avoid picking up fish by the lip or lower jaw or holding the fish vertically.
Avoid holding a fish by its gill plate or touching its gills.
Minimize the amount of time that you handle a fish to reduce stress. Release or place your fish in a livewell as quickly as possible.
Always handle fish with bare wet hands and not gloves, towels, etc. to avoid removing a fish's slime. The slime coating protects the fish from disease.

I am usually the SOB who takes the bullet on this subject, so thanks for being first. There is nothing good about holding any fish that way. Nuff said and I see where the OP agreed. Thank you, sir!
