Couple Reports: Veteran's Day and MAD Saturday

Had to run a few errands in the morning and got a glimpse of a glassy Ashley driving over the 526 bridge. It was the calmest I’d seen for mid-morning and not a lick of wind. We decided to take advantage of the calm conditions and got cooking to the jetties. I was able to run her wide open to the north side of the north jetty and threw a few corks at the rocks and live shrimp on the bottom of the stern. No action so we swung to the south side of the south jetty and it was on like donkey kong. We caught 12 species in total if you count the difference between a ray and a skate, and not counting a pinfish of course. We caught a handful of big and small whiting, bsb, clearnose skate, southern stingray, bonnethead, bluefish (which quickly became bait for reds), an eel, speck, reds, too many weakfish to count, a striped burr fish, and a couple undersized black drum. It was my coworker’s second time fishing and he caught his first shark, which is always funny to see. Ended the day with a nice 30" red pictured below and called it a day.

On Saturday I met a group of three nukes in the gravel lot at Rivers Edge. Two of them took my advice and layered up, the third planned to tough it out. As you all know the wind was humming out of the north, and after cruising to the harbor we realized it was going to be frigid, wet ride to the jettys. The guys were intent on getting a big red or at least a shark, so we vikinged through dynamite hole and hunkered down on the south side of the south jetty. Two of the nukes hadn’t ever fished in salt before, bottom fishing it was. After a chilly hour the wind laid down and the fish woke up, and we ended up finding a school of weakfish about 30 yards off the rocks and they landed two 19"’ and at least 20 smaller keepers. At one point, the youngest guy had a screamer that took off straight

Great report and good on you:sunglasses:

Great weekend for you folks and very nice post Mr. Ship:sunglasses:

Hey Larry!!!
It really surprised me that you didn’t trailer up and take a couple
of our heros’ out for the day. We had a few volunteers from Beaufort
to participate and all had a blast… Maybe next year???

I really would have and wanted too, even though I’m 100 miles away and don’t know squat about fishing Charleston.

My Mom has been in the hospital for 2 months and passed away 2 weeks ago. I’ve been swamped with taking care of family matters since then. Overwhelmed is more descriptive.

Good on everybody who participated, hopefully I can do it next year.

Thanks for all of the positive ■■■■■■■■ guys, you all know the real thanks go to our men and women in uniform.

Larry, so sorry to hear about your Mom, that’s got to be tough and I’m sure you’re the rock for the rest of the family. Hopefully next year circumstances will be better. I’ll make a point to introduce myself to the rest of you guys at next year’s captains’ meeting rather than living vicariously through the forum.

On a side note, I don’t know why my photos keep showing up sideways. Guess I need to just turn the darn phone next time.

Mr. Ship , my photos kept coming out sideways, I have an Iphone, I did turn phone like you said horizontally and it fixed it. I also hope the best for you Larry, and God Bless your momma.

Thank you all for the kind words. It was time. She was a warrior too. And she loved being on the water. Don’t want to hijack this thread with that though. Yall did good :sunglasses:

Thank you btshipp, and all the others who took part in the MAD event. Great report and thanks for the photos! Y’all did way better than most, from what I’ve seen/read.

Thank you to all the veterans, young and old, and I plan to be there next year.
