Covering a hole...

I just upgraded my depthfinder and now have a Lowrance HDS7 gen2 touch. My old unit had an external GPS antenna mounted on top of the console. I need to remove it in order to try and sell my old unit, but I would like to put something else in it’s place so I can cover the hole.

I looked at getting one of the Sirius weather antenna modules, but after looking at the price of the subscription I don’t really like that idea too much. Does any one have another idea for a useful accessory that can take up the same space and not get in the way.

If you end up finding nothing, I could probably make you a nice decorative wooden cover to put over it. But a smartphone holder would be a good possibility, I hate carrying them in my pocket on a boat since I have a habit of dumping pocket contents at the worst possible times.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.

Put a wooden dowel in there and use it to keep spools of leader line. I can never find my leader line when I need to change hooks or fray a leader on oysters.

What is your old unit? I have been thinking of running a separate finder and chart plotter instead of the split screen I use now.

Its a lowrance LMS 337c. It works fine, but will need a transducer. I used the old one on my HDS. A new transducer costs around $90, so I still don’t know how much to ask for it and haven’t taken the GPS antenna off yet either.

I like the idea of something to hold a spool of leader though. I may make up something in the shop for that purpose.

Matt, both of you, thanks for the ideas.

When you figure out what you want for it, shoot me a pm. I could possibly just use it for a plotter and not get a transducer.

Theres nothing like the "Smell" and sounds of the creek. Its not just one thing that makes it familiar..its all of it.

The hole is probably 1/2" surrounded by three or four #10 screw holes. Grand total about 3" in dia. I already have a compass.

How about a cup holder?

you could fill the holes with epoxy and cover the top (or a portion covering the holes) with an opaque non-skid material like Kiwi Grip?

I have considered making a non-skid “patch” on the top of my console for phones, ipods, lures, hooks, pliers, handheld gps, whatever to lay on and not slide around.

Picture of your wife?

I thought about another cup holder, but then I’d have to run a drain line and it would clutter up under the console. I like the nonskid pad idea, but I already have a spot onto my console where I keep my junk out of my pockets too and they wont slide around.

A picture of my wife would get ruined by the water.

Here are some pictures of what I have:

A closer look:

The antenna is 3.5" dia, the holes underneath are less than that.
Thanks for all the responses guys.

you could add a mirror so you can check your hair when you get to the fishing hole.

Or a beer tap…or a mini Howard’s Rock!

Marine-Tex epoxy. It comes in white and you can wet sand/polish it so it will be flush and look decent. They sell it at ACE, West Marine, Lowes.

I had a similar situation on the dash of my boat. Lots more holes to patch after I removed the sounder and box it was mounted in. Marine-Tex is a excellent product and you could certainly go that route. However, if you can work with Marine-Tex you can do gel coat as well. If your boat is not to old and the manufacturer still produces boats in the same color, you could very easily get some gel coat from a dealer or manufacturer and match it almost perfectly. I did not have that luxury so I went the route of getting some plain white and tinting the color as close as I could. You really have to look to see where I patched the holes. Finish is perfect, color is a tad off is all. I have patched boats 6-8 years old though and gotten gel coat from the manufacturer and after a good buffing you could not see where the patch was. Working with gel coat is not hard. Once you do it once you will probably never use anything else again.

Move the compass to where the antenna is now and then you have just a couple of screw holes to fill.

Look at these guys.

They are on that other site but have good prices and can make about anything. I keep trying to figure out how to put one of these on my dual console somewhere, but neither of my two consoles are suitable room-wise.
