Cow horns

Was bow hunting in Keowee in Zone Two Yesterday AM. Saw 4 does with a good size cow horn in tow. Had several shot opportunities but decided to wait it out.Question is,should I have taken him out to improve the gene pool? What are your thoughts on this?

a cow horn can grow up to be a nice buck. your choice as to whether to shoot or not.

Do the heard a favor and take out a doe. If I see a cow horn that has one side much larger than the other or it appears to be an older buck, I’ll shoot it.

if typical 1st rack bucks in the area have 4-6 points a piece or my freezers been empty too long i have no problem culling a cowhorn but ive let plenty of em walk before too. if people post pics of spikes on here i wont be one to shame them for it.

I saw this particular buck several times last year.He does not seem to be growing a larger rack but body size has def improved. Approaching 3 years is my guess. Big boy is in the area so I think I’ll wait a while.

I had a buddy that had a pet buck. The first two years he sported cow horns about 9 inches long, on the third year he grew into a very nice 8 point outside the ears. But I have also killed a very old deer that was a 3 point, so I guess you have to use your best judgement.

I agree with fred take the doe. Its a good
chance the cow horn will have a nicrr rack
nexy year. Take in to consideration that young
bucks will have larger racks the following yr
as long as the food supply is adequate.

HAZARD my opinon on that cow horn turning into a nice 8
I would think it was the food supply. If u plant
food plots make sure the soil is adequatly fertile.
Nutrients is the key to a healthy herd.

What is a good sized cow horn? 100lbs? 120lbs? 150+lbs? Many young bucks with potential get shot by hunters with little or no patience or desire to take a doe. Let them walk unless you are 100% sure that Cowhorn is a mature deer.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Killed a cowhorn 6 years ago, weighed 170lbs, had a 13" horn and 11.5" one. He needed killin, havent seen one like him since, most grow out of it if givin the chance to do so.

I would say if a cowhorn is 150 lbs
probably a good idea to take him
out.
