Crab Bank

Anyone know if you would get in trouble if you kayaked out to crab bank and get out and wade around in the water? I have heard its illegal to step foot on it as well as bird island. I know it is. But I question if they would care if you walked around wadding for fish in the water and not getting on the land?

I rented yaks out of Shem’s Creek about 6~7 years ago and they said that it’s OK to go ashore there on the end of the island nearest Shem’s. We did but didn’t venture beyond the shore right there. We then paddled all around it. I think it drops off pretty quick on the harbor side. It seems that there were markings where to tell you where you can’t go. I also think that they said it’s only off limits during the rookery time of the year. I think that’s spring & summer but don’t know for sure. I’m sure you can get better info from the yak rental folks or DNR.

I’ve been on bird island, just like FlickerFisher said, you can land on it just can’t go past the signs onto the island, the DNR guy didn’t care that I was walking around on the wet sand. I haven’t been to Crab bank.

Theres nothing like the "Smell" and sounds of the creek. Its not just one thing that makes it familiar..its all of it.

I would not set foot on Crab Bank, Bird Key or Deveaux Bank…

The colonial nesting behavior of these birds makes them very susceptible to disturbance. Birds are densely packed into breeding sites during the nesting season, rendering the entire colony susceptible to disruption or destruction. Therefore, the sanctuary is closed to public use from March 15 thru October 15. The area may be viewed from boats during these months and is accessible to the public below the high water tidal line from October 16 thru March 14. Dogs are prohibited year round and camping is not allowed.

Not only would it be disruptive for the birds but if you camped there you would be camping on Bird Sh**

Not trying to camp. Trying to wade in the water. Thanks for the info
