Hey guys
I’m 17, and have been tying for a little over a year now. I have mainly been tying trout flies, but have recently moved on to saltwater patterns. I have taken Mad Mikes words to heart and started with clousers and lots of them. I tried my first crab today and wanted some constructive criticism and/or any tips y’all have. I based the body off the copperhead crab, claws are marabou and flashabou, eyes are medium, and legs are just your average crazy legs. Watta y’all think?
Personally, I’d like the tail to be just a bit longer and I prefer smaller lead eyes. Otherwise I think if you put that in front of a redfish they’d be more than happy to oblige…
A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

Thanks for the input. I always look at the small eyes and think to myself thats way to small, but i think i need to suck it up and use them.
Looks good, and I can tell you’ve spent time practicing the little things, your wraps look good, everything is clean…
The tail could be just a hair longer, and I would splay some hackle on there… (chicken neck hackle in brown or varient) Also i would downsize the eyes… I use small lead eyes these days for most things… not that any of that is required or anything, just my .02
Looking good, keep up the good work…

Good looking fly. I agree with the comments about adding some splayed hackle to the tail & making it a bit longer.
I’ve never tied crabs that flashy, but I guess it depends on the water clarity where you intend to fish them. Of course gold spoons have always caught fish too!
When I’m fishing in grass especially thick grass and the fish has his face buried in the mud I want a heavy fly to get down to him.
Very nice looking fly. When you get the perfect one based on the suggestions above let me know and I’ll buy some from you. Good going.

Yep, good point! I’ve experienced not having enough weight & the fly would hang in the grass above the fish & never even get seen. Amazing how easy it is to spook them trying to get a fly to sink.
