The more crabs you have in it the heavier it will be… if you do not have a big stable yak like FireMedic said you will flip yourself over… but then again if you do it right you could win a Darwin Award…

Done this from my yak about 200 yds off the beach here in Myrtle. Dont know about the recovery process because the two times I have done it we lost the trap. Tried to tell my buddy there wasnt enough weight in it for the current, but he wouldnt listen. Set the trap on 48th Ave N, got a call 4 days later where someone found the trap at Apache pier…LONG way north. I do paddle a barge though (Future Beach 144) so that helped. I have though many times about dropping them in the marsh and would do so without hesitation if I could go often enough. Cant drop one and not be able to get back for a week.

I watched someone shuttle crab traps out 2-3 hundred yards or so off the beach at Sunrise park not long ago. I wasn’t close enough to see what kind of yak but it seemed they were taking one per trip and had at least 3 traps.

I could see dropping it in near a launch point and picking it up on the way back as being feasible. I wouldnt’ want to paddle a distance with one just cause of the pita factor.

If you go for the Darwin award, try to get it on youtube…

I have pulled a small one, but feel comfortable enough to pull a large one with my yak, but I too paddle the Future Beach Angler 144, very stable yet heavy

I would do it with a small one, not a large one. Easy to flip. What are you gonna do when you have to empty.out.the trap in the boat to get the little ones?

I actually had a big one of the front, and big one on the back strapped down. It was a little hairy at times but had to try it out. Much rather do it in the marsh now that I know haha. I just love a half mile from ocean to driveway and about 13 miles to nearest marsh.

I do it sometimes but have a great situation, live right on the marsh. Worst part is pulling it up with all the rotten bait dripping on and in the yak.

That isn’t something I’d really ever do.
