Crab steaming

How big of a steam pot do yall use for crab? Would only be steaming about a dzn crab for a meal for myself and wife. Not sure if a 24 qt is too small? is 44 too big?

If its the taller pot, 24 should be fine.

I’m just glad to hear someone is actually steaming crabs and not boiling them. 'Bout time someone got it right.

Earn it everyday

If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.

Never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet.

A pot big enough that they all fit in and you can close the lid. If they don’t fit, you need a bigger pot:smiley: I put a rack on the bottom to keep the crabs above the water. Same with oysters.

2" of water in the bottom is enough to steam a dozen crabs. Steam is much better than boiling.

Amen!!

A little water, a little white vinegar, a little of your favorite beer, a rack in the bottom of the pot (as Cracker Larry described), add crabs (belly down, in layers) and absolutely cover in Old Bay after each layer. I’m an Old Bay junkie so you may want to add it according to your liking. Steam for 10-15 minutes (depending on how many crabs your steaming).

Arm yourself with the appropriate tools and adult beverage of choice and have at’em.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

I’ve always dreamed the seafood. Boiling gives it a weird texture haha. thanks for the tips guys. I am hopefully going to be putting a pot on the water soon and want to have the cooking pot ready haha.

Keep the lines tight and tips bent

Steam only!! Use a pot big enough to hold the crabs with the lid on and a rack on the bottom (crumpled up foil, pie tin with holes punched in it, if you don’t have a rack) to keep the crabs out of the VINEGAR!!!

Do not use water to steam (don’t submerge in liquid) crabs!! Use only vinegar (apple cider) with a beer or two added, but not necessary.

After liquid comes to a boil, place crabs apron-down in pot and use a combination of Old Bay, pepper, kosher salt, some cayenne red pepper and pickling spice… sprinkle on each layer of crabs. When crabs turn red, they are done!

Enjoy!
