Crabbbing with my daddy

finally!!! crab season has started for my daddy…and I got to go with him to pull his pots for the first time last thursday, and again on Monday. Nothing could make me happier!! I have been sick but I swear to you…even with water running from my eyes and goop from my nose…lol…yes those fancy “Buffs” come in handy for many uses:wink:…after a bout of coughing and then sucking in the swet sweet smell of salt, maesh, mudd…and yes…a little manhadden…I started to feel so much better! Thursday the wind blew 25-30 with some really nasty gusts…making working the pots really hard…and leaving no chance to toss a line. Daddys shoulder has been bothering him so I pulled while he drove…which is just fine with me. Water temp was 54 and air temp about the same…nasty old wind would cut right through your bones like a knife. The water on the bay was whipped up to a serious foam that would put one of my moms meringues to shame and like those egg whites…we took a pretty good beating in the skiff crossing it…but laughed through it all. Quite a few pots bait-less and crab=less…and some even left open…dang those crabs are smart:imp:…I will just say this…i hate a thief:imp:. I asked daddy what he would do if he caught someone to which he said…whats can you do? A thief will lie to you and deny it even as they stand holding the pot in their hands…but I would hate to be the person caught…if nothing else theyd be in for a good tongue scalding for sure… just a little over two bushels of ones for 51 pots…lots of small ones that were just a little short…and not catching enough females to save right now. Monday was a much nicer day…still a little windy…but not like last trip.water temp had dropped to 47-49! Crabs picked up just a little…and so did the pelican population wanting a free dinner. those things are relentless! They were snatching at my glove as I tried to dump the bait from the pots ! I even tried pulling then facing it towards me to unlatch the bait door and they would fly up in my f

All Mr. Pelican wanted was a snack … haha In reference to the 2nd video …

Now that’s the good life. Love your posts, Penny.

Those are some fantastic photos!

My son loves the pelican pictures. He loves watching them and waving to them every time we go out on the boat.

Thanks for sharing. Your reports are the best!

Thanks guys! I wish I had had my fancy smancy camera with the nice lens…ESP for the eagle…but don’t dare take it in the boat as you can see how muddy we get…so the old canon g9 makes every trip. Am actually thinking about buying another one if I can find a new ne or one in good shape…or a g12…just for times like these. Those pelicans re a riot…and I laugh at daddy talking to them ;).
Stumpnocker…I wish I could spend MORE time on the water. I work 12 hr night shifts just so I can have more days off to fish ;). I work six twelves and a eight each two weeks…and try to work it where I work a few…and am off a few…plus sometimes get off work and go fish a little while then sleep early afternoon until time to go in… If I could work the creeks everyday with daddy I would. That would be a dream come true ;)…but for now I just work and hope for the next day off when I can be in the creek again. The veterans I care for (hospice /long term care patients) laugh at my pics, but love them too. . ,I wish I could take jt hem out there with me…they’d love it!

Nice. I love your reports. They really distill the Low Country lifestyle.

Penney, I see those pelicans are just petrified to be around you and your daddy.

In your expert opinion…When do the crabs start heading for shallow water (so they can be caught from a dock)?
Thanks!

Your pictures seem to get better and better… if that is possible. thanks for sharing.

Just curious, do you keep the conchs? There was a time that given the right clientele you’d get better for them than the crabs. If nothing else they are better out of the water than destroying an oyster bed.

Daddy had actually pulled those big ones from his oyster bed…and planned to clean and make conch chowder out of them. I think They bring about forty cents a pound right now if you sell them…and you are right…they can destroy some oysters! There were also quite a few smaller ones in the crab pots. The hermit crabs in the bigger shells like to get in there too…I like to crack them open and use them for bait! Bass caviar!

The crabs right now seem to be doing best in the deeper water…but catching in shallow too. Can’t wait till peeler season when they shed:stuck_out_tongue:…mmmmmm. That should be end of march first part of April as it warms up…glad y’all like the pics. I tried to fish and actually saw a few…but the dang pelicans would fly to wherever I threw my line and get all tangled up in it…not the hook…but the line itself…then I’d slowly have to reel them in and daddy would grab them up while I untangled them. I swear they weren’t even scared and didn’t fight us…it’s like it was a game to them…

Argo…yeah…terrified:smiley:…you can see in the one little video daddy is fussing at them the whole time:smiley:
