Well its been a tough week for my daddy. I called him Monday on my way to work to tell him to have a good day and he said he was in the process of trying to paddle back to the dock…and that the motor was shot……felt pretty darn helpless being on the “hill” and so far away and him out there…but he said he wasnt far from the dock and made it ok…pots needed to be pulled and emptied of crabs and old bait so Tuesday morning early I was heading to the “village”…we took the little 14 ft mckee that we gig out of. Daddy said he would have taken it the day before but it didnt have a pot puller like the skiff…but with me there “now it did”
. He had pulled something in his hand a couple days back on top of everything and its swollen and sore, so I told him I’d show him I’d been paying attention and work his pots for him…and I did 40+…yep…by hand…this is where you are supposed to say “dat-a girl”
…Daddy kept saying he’d do it but I told him to sit back…eat the boiled peanuts and lunch I’d brought him, have a cold cola and let me do it…he did…and he kept me laughing all day …have ya seen that gator hunting show??..seen the guy that calls that girl 'lizabeth thats hunting with him…???..well he called me 'lizabeth all day:smiley:…especially when we got to a area where he’s beem seeing gators…he’d say…“now ya wach ou ‘lizabeth…don ya let no ol gator gets yoe han’ whens ya rech down for dat der pot”…then he’d laugh say…wait till donnie see’s your clothes…now Im not one to care much about getting dirty…I figure its part of doing whatcha do…he knows that so thats a joke between us…as it drives donnie crazy when I come home covered in fish guts, blood and mudd and smelling like whatever Ive fished or crabbed with…nothing a good washing wont fix though:wink:… Big tides had the pots “rolled up” and “buried down” in the mudd some places, and had to search for a few…and lost a couple too…but wasnt too bad once we found them…he did a great job of driving and instructing…and /i

Great stuff their…my Dad loved to fish…could not afford a boat but he taught me and my bro,s/sis how to fish off docks…he used to bring transistor radio and we would listen to Carolina football games…funny, we would throw lines out as far as we could and catch Croaker,Spot, occasional trout, bass, flounder…my grandmother could not cast so she would drop line straight down and always hook up with something huge that would cut her off around the pilings… Great memories…Dad passed away December 15 last year…still fish those docks but now by boat and cast under…I miss him
thanks guys…bugs Ive been fishing and crabbing a lot…and guess between trying to get in the creek and juggling work…yeah…gotta do that too…my posting has gotten a little late…glad someone missed me roo is doing fine…anxiously awaiting the next holiday when she can dress up again
Elad3…I treasure times with my dad thats for sure…and isnt it funny how when we go fishing from “the hill” we throw. waaaaaaay out as far as we can…and when we are in a boat we fish as close to the bank as we can…
so sorry for your loss…but sounds like you too were Blessed with a Dad and family who loved you and spent time with ya’ll as you were growing up. nothing can replace that.
Another thing I like about “going home”…is seeing my family…saw two of my dads brothers at the ramp tuesday as we were getting ready to go out…then another good family friend(thomas)who worked with daddy on his trawler for years and who always has a big smile and hug for me just like when I was little…good times for sure,

Stonoman is right, your stories are very good and I look forward to every one of them. There are not many people that lived the life your Dad has that ever had time to record their experiences. Your stories make all of us feel that somehow we are a part of what ever you share with us. Thank you for them.

This has been brought up before and it is sooooooo true. Penny, some time if you’re downtown there is a visitor center on Church street chock full of Charleston books. We stumbled upon it (thankfully, as it was cool) and it was loaded with crazy (and good) books about Charleston that would make a picture book of your fishing trips look like Gone with the Wind! “My Dog Tours Charleston”, blah blah blah. None I saw would be as meaningful and enjoyable as a picture book of you & your Dad fishing.
I actually thought of ya’ll as I was browsing through them! You should do it! Lord knows you have the photos! LOL! Just don’t tell your Dad! I’m sure he’d poo poo that idea QUICK, the old salty dog that he is! Just do it, publish it, and give it to him for Christmas! He’ll begrudgingly love it! Just make sure Meg & I get an autographed copy!

Ms. Penny, I have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet but reading you’re words and seeing you’re pics, I am convinced that you are truly AMAZING!!!
vinman…and others :)…there are times that I wished I had at least made a copy of my posts here so I could have my own little scrap book of memories to browse through…laugh at and pass on…I did make daddy a photo book of pictures with a fathers day poem one year thanks to the help of Russ (the real top2bottom) and a printer friend( original poem was posted on here in offtopic fathers day) …and when my dad saw and read it, it made my dad cry…and that made me cry ,as Ive rarely seen my dad cry…and then my mom cried, and everyone else teared up…including Russ :)…and then we all laughed about it…and still do heres a few pages from it…
dont know that I could still retrieve all of the old posts…but now youve started me thinking maybe I should, at least to have for myself… thanks for the compliments guys…
vin give your meg a big hug for me…and always remember that I bet she adores you just as much as I do my dad:)

Ms. Penny, Those are some great pics, I wish that I some of my dad. He died when I was 8. I am now 50. He commercial fished to feed 6 boys. Crabs, shad and fished for fun when he would take a day off to take Momma fishing. I think of him every day. Thanks for helping keep his memory alive.
Im So sorry about your dad:frowning_face:…posts like this make me appreciate what i have even more…my dad and mom like to go fishing together too…mom volunteers at the church doing sec. work for them so stays busy…but Im hoping she’ll slow down and take some time to go before it gets too hot as she burns and gets sun poison easily. One thing I need to mention…mom ALWAYS has a delicous dinner of some sort for us when we get in … now how nice is that!!! even when we go fishing!!
I have to say my dads family is one of the closest Ive ever seen…and I mean that. I cant remember bickering between them…maybe as boys…but not now…They are very close Most are attached to the ocean in some way as are their children. Daddy grew up one of 5 boys and 3 girls. So different but so much alike…love them all.
well got to work 12hr shifts next 2 days:frowning_face:…hope it rains…lol…just kidding…ya’ll catch’em up…and hopefully I’ll be out there Sunday and Monday…
