crabbing in Spring...oysters in April?

How is the crabbing this time of year? =We’re planning to make a trip to James Island to crab and pick up some oysters to bring home in a few weeks.

Are the crabs still hibernating this time of year? Oysters ok to eat in April?

I was say no way on the oysters–especially the way the water temps are rising. I think there will be plentry of crabs around though, should keep you busy.

You have it backwards… The oysters are still very plentiful and full of meat. All areas are open, and there are plenty of clams around too. Crabs are a different story for the next few weeks. Crabs are not eating as it is “peeler” time. My crabber ran 100 pots yesterday and had 1.5 bushels. Crab prices are higher right now than at any time of the year. This will last about 2 weeks until they stop shedding.

Some crabbers told me this past weekend, that the crabs were really small now and the only bigger ones they could find were in really deep water. I caught 20 while fishing a few days ago and all but 1 were less than 5 inches. Don’t bother with crabbing right now…wait until later in the summer when the big ones are out.

Sells Fish is located in Summerville on Highway 17 near the Intersection with I-26. Head towards Moncks Corner on 17 and turn into the shopping center on the left with Tractor Supply and Subway. Sells is located right next to the Subway. (Almost across the street from Bi-Lo)

It is an awesome store…a visit will be time well spent. We spend some time with them every week. Lobster Claws - YUMMMMMM!

Oysters are their best from now until the close of the season.

Hey DF, Burnin’ up the roads brother.
No screen time much anymore:dizzy_face:

That’s what happens when you start making the big bucks! Gimme a holler sometime, let’s wet a line.

I wouldn’t throw crabbing out…I was sheepshead fishing yesterday and caught four blue crabs on rod & reel. They were so aggressive they were eating my fiddler crabs and I was hooking them when I felt them tugging at my line…was a first for me. Bet I would have really caught some with a chunk of fish… They were all Jimmy’s 6 inches plus.
