Crabbing with my daddy. 03/24

Was able to convince Donnie that I needed to go crabbing again today…and at 0330 je mumbled that I had “issues” as he pulled the pillow over his head and Roo wasted little time in settling into my place on the bed. “I’ve never seen anyone get so excited about going out crabbing” he says… He doesn’t know just how happy this makes me I guess.

We got a little late start this morning as we got to the ramp with some of the others leaving and had to socialize a little…plus daddy’s friend Charles was having a power problem with his motor… That’s one thing I like about home…no one gets in much of a rush to go anywhere…and folks are always willing to lend a hand…or supervise  if need be. So we had four boats ready to hit the creek…but for the moment it was more important to watch Charles tear his boat apart looking for the source of the problem…which turned out to be a line cut by a screw.

Time for work and the temperature was noticeably different from friday…and I was glad for the extra clothes.
Funny how no matter how many times you pass through the same creeks and water…it can look so different. I mean…while its familiar…you can always see something different…or notice something you never noticed before.

I laughed to myself as I saw daddy put his Christmas hat from me on his head…and was happy he liked it. Here’s some pics form our day…

Office with a view:smiley:

I look at daddy and I wish I could see the world through his eyes…and then I realize that in a lot of ways I do because of being here with him

I laughed when I saw the cut up boot for a hinge,I have been trying to find some old bicycle inner tubes to do the same thing.I have used them before, I split them and then run it the length of the cooler lid.

Thanks again Penny!!! Like I said before…well you know what I’m thinking

Gonna have to show these to my daughter so she can wish that she could go with just to see the “wompus” that close-she wouldn’t even care if it gave her a good shower

She’ll be down on Coosaw next week but plans on taking it as a study break…she’s not much of an early riser (typically works nights at our hospital) so doubt if she’d even consider heading that far that early even if it was for a wompus:smiley:

i have been on this site for years do not post much, but i always look for yours thanks for the experience and the great photo essays

Y’all are very welcome!

Great pics and report. What do you think happened to the two pots? Think they were stolen? Lines cut? Either way, it’s sad to think people do that crap.

I think they are somebody elses now. so that’s three pots @55.00 he has lost in the two days he has worked. we are also finding pots open and no crabs…and closed with no bait and no crabs… its just wrong. peeler season is when it really gets bad…but most of that will be from other crabbers who just don’t care if they rob another man, esp if they aren’t from around there. Im sure DNR will be watching this year with little tolerance for law breakers after last year. sometimes if pots get cut off or “roll up” with the tide, we can spot them on low tide as he crabs mostly in the creeks and shallow waters. he isn’t the only one having troubles… pots do drift at times with a big tide when marsh gets hung around the buoys and such…but we can usually find those. I hate it for him…esp since he has put so much time into making his own pots trying to save some money. I don’t think pennywill be very nce if I see someone stealing from him or someone we know.

Yep…I’m sorry your Dad has to put up with that. Hope DNR catches them and prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law. Or perhaps someone catches them and gives them a different type of justice.

I love it that you get up at 0330 on a cold morning to take those pictures, so that I can sleep in and still get to admire the scenery

Your photography is getting better too :sunglasses: New camera or just more practice? Love the little diamondback terrapin. We used to catch those by the hundreds when I was a youngun, 45 years ago. Sometimes more terrapin than crab. There was a big market for them back then. Between turtle stew and barrier island causeway traffic, there aren’t many of them left anymore.

Thanks for sharing as always. My friend in Georgetown goes through the same things with his pots. Several empty or gone every week. Shame this has been going on for years.

Same as stealing someone’s tools from their truck or worksite…except you can’t insure crab pots

Great posts…always love the pics

I know the salt water would not be good for it, but have you ever thought about putting up a deer camera on the bank? Not exactly sure how they work, but you may could buy a cheaper one on sale somewhere. It would be worth it for me just to know who the rascal was that was steeling them.

There’s a place in the spring where we see hundreds and hundreds of them, but you’re right, the numbers aren’t what they were in the past.

When I crabbed in Fl for a while , thieves were always around . If you had to replace a pot then the new one was taken . I never could figure out why none of the old ones were taken .

Some of the crabbers put hooks in the rope hoping someone would get stuck real bad .Peeler season was really bad .Some made their own tanks to put the ones that hadnt shed yet . Better than getting them stolen .

As always I love your stories and pictures
