After a week of work I finally got another day off to go spend the day crabbing with my Daddy. Had to leave earlier because of the tides…so on the water at 6. Its amazing how everyday that I leave that ramp with my dad ,I am hit with the reality of how Blessed I am in just being there. I look around on the ride out and notice once again how quickly the sky changes color as another day begins…and I watch and see signs of life in and around the marsh ,as it too comes awake. From the grey herons silently standing waiting on their next meal to swim by…the oyster catchers skimming the water…the small marsh wrens busily weaving their nests in the marsh tops to the fiddlers and periwinkles along the banks. The fiddlers seem to wave at us as we pass by raising their big claws up in unison…making me laugh …dragon flies dart around in a dance of their own and mullet and manhadden break the water at every turn, but no time to catch some to fish…we have work to do. Look behind you and you see small shrimp, “hoppers” and fish scattering as the wake of the boat draws the water from the mud flats and oyster rocks and then sends it crashing back. I know this will make some of you laugh but the smell of marsh and mud is like a “perfume” to me that I will never tire of …a smell of “home” and of all that is simple and good. I watch my daddy as he looks around at the things he has seen for years…and yet I know that it is something he too doesnt take for granted …and will never tire of. I wonder at the changes he has seen from going to a small boy to that of the man he is today…and cant wait for the stories I may hear today. Mom has made him promise not to let me pull all of the pots today…reminding him that “I am a girl and shouldnt be doing such things”…“could hurt myself”…which makes me laugh and cringe at the same time, but I know she just loves and worries about me …esp since I am no longer a young girl:smiley:. As always I have packed daddy lunch and special snacks…so I tell him I wont tell her what all he has
