Was able to slip away for a day of pot pulling with my daddy. Peeler crabs are still running so you have to work your pots everyday to collect them as they shed quickly. Today was a lot of fun…but turned out to be a real challenge for us when the wind decided to taunt us all day. They were calling for gusts to 25…well we would have been happy if thats all it had thrown at us! Old Mr.wind tormented us all day making it hard to pull pots and sometimes taking two runs at them to grab the bouy. I pulled around 65 pots today…but it felt like a hundred with the wind and sea tugging on one end…and me on the other!
The morning started out really nice…slight breeze…water temp 67-69…down a little from last trip/ Pots were hit and miss all day…some empty…which always make you wonder:face_with_head_bandage:…esp when you pull several in a row that are completely empty. Male crabs which you use to lure the young peelers in…are hard to come by…which seems to always happen this time of year. Maybe thats why the females go in search of the ones in the pots.[:I]
Dont know if you watch swamp people …but last weeks show they were talking about “strange happenings and bad MOJO”…and things would go wrong, crazy stuff would happen and the wind would pick up…and they even did a indian chant at one point.
Well today we wondered if we had bad mojo:imp:…and daddy swore it was my fault.!!! I took two crab hats I ordered on line as a joke and actually convinced daddy to put one on for a pic. He reminded me “Im not Roo that you can dress all up”…but I gave him the old…pleeease daddy…you use to dress up with me when I was little…and he finally did it…and I laughed till I about split a gut. He had no sooner let me snap a couple quick pics when the wind blew down on us like a hurricane…kicking the water into a froth and throwing it in our faces…even the birds took off flying sideways in a strange dance of their own…and as we took off daddys hat went sailing off his head into the air and landed in the water He
I find myself looking forward to your posts every week! Thanks for them
you are welcome. I didnt add that we also caught two nice bull whiting in the traps…silly fish…dinner

Remember that if they are soft fro shedding they don’t have to be five inchs! No size limit on the
Ones that have shed.
One of my most favorite foods…so glad Donnie doesn’t like them Haha…grosses him out as I sit there munching away with crab legs hanging out of my mouth:)

How do ya’ll prepare/cook peelers? I have eaten them fried on a sandwich but that is the only way.
I carefully pull back the flap or apron on the bottom, exposing the inside. I remove the dead mans fingers…the grayish things on either side of the middle…also known as the gills .and rinse the “guts/innards” out as well as removing the little pink things you will see there too. Cut the face part out( eyes and mouth.)…As well as the flap on the bottomRinse real well…salt and pepper…dip in egg wash(beaten egg) then in your fav. Seafood breader…some like plain ol’flour. Fry. I use just enough oil to fry one side at a time…season more to taste. I sometimes put a little lemon pepper or dash of smoked paprika.
Really good on a sandwich with a fried green tomato
Softshells cook fast so don’t overlook!

Here’s another way
-
To clean soft-shell crabs, hold the crab in one hand, and using a pair of kitchen shears, cut off the front of the crab, about 1/2 inch behind the eyes and mouth. Squeeze out the contents of the sack located directly behind the cut you just made.
-
Lift one pointed end of the crabs outer shell; remove and discard the gills. Repeat on the other side.
-
Turn the crab over and snip off the small flap known as the apron. Rinse the entire crab well and pat dry. Once cleaned, crabs should be cooked or stored immediately.
Storing Soft-Shell Crabs
Soft-shell crabs are often stored at very cold temperatures to keep the shell from hardening and to prevent decomposition if they die. Store cleaned crabs wrapped in plastic wrap in the coldest part of the refrigerator for up to two months

Another wonderful report!
I LOVE THOSE HATS!!!
I had some fun with my dad this weekend too, but we didn’t go fishing because of the wind. He doesn’t get around on a flats boat like he used to. I’ll get him back out there when things calm down.
Your reports are the best! Thanks for sharing!

Penny…so even the claws are soft when the shed like that? You can just fry the whole thing and eat it? I really want to try some because I can only eat “shellfish” seeing as how I am allergic to fish( I know quite the opposite of the norm )! They certainly look delicious! Even most of the fish plates I see posted on here LOOK good as well!
“Fish On”
Mmmhmmmm…even the crunchy little claws! I take great delight in making a big show of eating claws and legs in front of Donnie…much to his dismay! Hahahaha. It’s like eating a 100% piece of fried lump crab meat… When you eat the body of it…
Now see what you’ve gone and done…
Made me want more!

Penny; Did your Pennys Daddy’s friend Flipper show up or was he off playing with someone else!
He was off playing. Saw him from a distance…haha…daddy did too ;). Guess he didn’t wants a good soaking n top of everything else :). My mom went crabbing with daddy one day last week.yeaaaaaa and got to get a first hand look at our friend. She asked and talked about how he rolled over and sideways and was smiling at her! I’m so glad she went with daddy( she is allergic to sun so has to choose days wisely) …and that she got to see our buddy. Wish I had been there to take a pic of the three of them…now that would have been SOMETHNG!
