Daddy finally got his boat/motor back last week after having it in the shop for almost four weeks for repair. Water pump, bearing in foot and some type of switch…and almost 1000.00 later as none of it fell under his warranty…we were finally ready to hit the creek again! Daddy said he was esp. happy for it as momma produced a "honey do " list for him to keep him occupied while the motor was being repaired…and working in the creek…believe me…is a lot easier than when mom gets on one of her cleaning spells:smiley:.
I was so excited sunday night about going that i couldnt fall asleep…and when I finally did it was only to find myself wide awake again at 0330! left the house at a little before 0500 with donnie mumbling and shaking his head…hitting hardees for biscuits for mom and daddy…and arrived in the village a little before 0600. First thing that struck me was the dark house. Not a single light on and not the familiar smell of brewing coffee when I walked up on the porch:flushed:. Mom answered to my knock and when I asked what was wrong she said daddy was still asleep as he hadnt slept well. ??? Now…Ive never known daddy NOT to be up prowling the house by 0500 or so…so this just didnt seem right, and caused my heart to flip flop…but a few minutes later a sheepish looking daddy walks into the living room with a grin on his face muttering something about not having been asleep at all:wink:
We left the dock at 0700 and I reminded him that I should have already pulled 10-12 pots by this time and that the only sunrise I would get to see was the one on the hardees bag he had because of his new “bankers hours” after being off so long …not going to tell you what his reponse was…yep…Mr. Sassy is back and any concerns that he wasnt his “normal” abnormal self…lol …disappeared. I think he missed our banter back and forth as much as he did the creek.
awesome, Penny! you are truly blessed.
Take care, Jim

Penfishn - Along with everyone else I look forward to your posts. I just wanted to say it seems the Folly River is thick with blue crabs. When I fish off my neighbor’s dock I can hardly keep bait on my hook long enough for a fish to bite it.
So I told my son, “Miss Penny put up some new dolphin pictures!”
I’ve never seen him drop a toy so fast!
Thanks for sharing. We both enjoyed your post!

first and foremost for anyone who doesnt know the rules…you are not supposed to feed or entice dolphins to come to your boat as it teaches them to be too trusting and dependent on people who may not always be in awe and appreciate their beauty…and who may not be good people when it comes to the treatment of them. Growing up in the creeks…we are so use to seeing them that we just consider them a part of the creek and of us…and I have never lost my awe of them. The dolphin in the pic has been around for a few years now…and when daddy first told me about its antics I asked him what he ahd been smoking in his pipe…until I saw it for myself. I look for him everytime we go out.and it makes me laugh and laugh to see him… I guess I become a child again…esp when he races along beside the boat and smacks the water soaking daddy and me…even in the winter. He is quite the personality…but I too sometimes worry someone will hurt him even if unintentionally. As human as he seems…he is still a creature of the sea. We dont “get him to come to the boat”…he chooses to…and seems determined to be the center of attention when he does… Yeah…i admit it…I may encourage him by leaning over the boat and babbling at him…but i cant help myself!!!. how can you look at one and not wonder what they are thinking and see when they look up at us. Maybe they have a show under the sea called “stupid human tricks” lol…cause they can make even the toughest old timer smile. We are blessed to see him/them… they are truely special…and cool

Wow, love your posts as usual.
Everyone knows that dolphins are the second most intelligent species on earth. Above humans and second to mice.

Penny, Could you offer me some advice on what bait works best for stone crab and where to target in the water column (around oysters and is deeper really better?) even if i see them in the shallows at low tide… for stone crabs? Thanks!!!
Any advice would be appreciated. Best baits for crabs or for stone crab and where I could possibly target stone crabs would be great. Thanks!!!
And awesome awesome pics of the dolphin!!!
So glad to see the boat is fixed. I always enjoy your pictures and words.

We don’t target stone crabs…but I will tell you that when we catch them they are usually in traps that are near a large area of live oysters…or deep holes with rough bottom. We see stone crabs when we are gigging along oyster beds…pretty sure they use them for “cover” …as far as bait. We use manhadden in daddy’s traps
